Yeah the anime has references to the original show and the western adaptation, although its a sequel to the original show.

The original Gridman did have that one episode though with that nice looking police lady. <_<

You can watch the anime and be fine. Theres one minor character thats related to and makes some vague, but direct references to the original show, but that wont affect your understanding of the animes plot.

If you really want, go watch the pilot of Gridman the Hyper Agent on YouTube after a certain, really weird plot twist (youll know it when you see it) and itll give you more context thatll help the finale not feel so out of left field.

There are a few plot points that make more sense if you've watched the original, particular for a specific character halfway through SSSS Gridman and in its finale. Apparently Episodes 1, 2, 6, 13, 25, 26, 38, and 39 are the episodes from the original that have relevant plot points, but this is second hand information, I'm sure someone who's watched the entire original series could give a better answer.

It's up to you if you wanna check out the original series, it seems most people got by just fine, but I'm sure fans of the original appreciated certain callbacks a lot more.

There's also cool things like the characters like Yuta, Alexis and GridKnight concept being taken from scrapped Gridman followup shows and stuff. Yuta, Akane and Alexis were planned for a Gridman show that never happened called Gridman F. It's cool that the anime finally used them.

Ive never watched any other Gridman stuff and I liked it quite a bit. Would have been better if Akane and Rikka were less annoying though.
