Honestly, if you're 18-20, it is exciting. You get out of the house, you get to be on your own, you get to do something that seems like a big deal. But once you get to your 30's or even your late 20's, you realize it's actually really petty. Only good thing about being in it is you are taken care of, but there's a lot of petty bs. Glad my career in the military was short. Hell no, wouldn't want to do that again.

Eh Air Force guys are mostly douche bags anyways. It's like being in a fraternity, except people try to fight you over petty BS and try to pull the book out when they get pissed.

Are you speaking from experience? I've got a lot of family in various branches of the military or they served in various branches, AF included, and from what I've heard, it's the chillest branch. They don't call it 'Chair Force' for nothin'. I've also heard that it's common for a lot of officers to be kind of awkward, at least on some level. Apparently the stereotype is that a lot of the bookish, nerdier types tend to go into the AF, even a lot of the pilots.

Uh yeah, I worked at Lackland for like 2 years. It's chill because it's easy, but most of those guys are a bunch of tight asses. The girls too.

What kind of shit would you see?

Just people whining over a bunch of petty BS. Like one time a guy was pissed because we were out of kale (I worked at the commissary), another time a guy was mad because the ketch up on the bottle he had was broken. People would give me attitude when I was driving. A plain clothes officer was telling this guy not to wear his sun glasses on top of his head once, a tech seargent got mad because i accidentally called him staff sgt. Stuff like that.

I've been in the Active Army for over 7 years.

I always chuckle when I see ads for the Army.

Though I sure as Hell didn't join because of the advertising.

I actually really, really want to join the military myself but I'm deaf in one of my ears so my entry might be barred. >_>

I'm thinking about talking to a recruiter anyhow to see if I can still get in. I'd love to go Air Force, Space Force, or Navy. Actually, I wanted to be a pilot above everything else but even if I do get in, cuz of my issue, I'm pretty sure I'd never be a pilot. lol That fucking sucks.

So, being deaf is a disqualifying factor. When you go through the screening process at MEPS, there is a hearing test. If you fail it, you'll probably be seen by an audiologist for an examination. They may be able to grant you a waiver.

If you manage to pass, you could just say you lost the hearing while already in.

However, I wouldn't go in expecting to be a pilot, if your hearing is poor.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a pilot.

But Air Force won't even touch me because I'm diagnosed ADHD and took meds for it (to my understanding both are disqualifying factors)

Also before getting my vision fixed, I was blind as a bat.

By the end of my second and last reinlistment I was all but dead inside. And if not for the Gi Bill it all would have been a waste of time for me personally.

Still cant believe people just up and leave without going through the proper procedure and obtaining your DD214. They've essentially wasted 4 years of their life if they dont.

Remember, the military's ads are so fucking stupid because they want to weed out people who would not be fooled by them. People who are fooled by their idiotic advertisements are exactly at the level of intelligence they want to join their ranks. This is the same for all advertisements.

I might be a piece of shit, but I regret not joining the military just because of the benefits. However I don't really have a lot of passion for the country I live in, so maybe I wouldn't be a good candidate for it.

When you're in your late 20s or early 30s, the military is pointless because you literally have to get rid of your whole life in order to join. You have to sell all of your belongings, get rid of your pets, and your apartment lease, quit your job, etc.

Yeah idk experiences vary.

I did 8 years in the Marines and loved my time and look back fondly at it. A lot of guys usually end up missing it in some capacity when they get out. Only reason I got out is that rank caught up with me and I didnt feel like transitioning into the staff role.

Met some of the best guys Ive ever met in my life, had some of the wildest and funnest times of my life, traveled the world, saved a lot of money, liked my job, and now Im going to school tuition/rent free and thoroughly enjoying it.

Only thing I would have done different was join a year earlier.

If you're even contemplating the army at that age you likely dont have, nor ever had any of that stuff to lose.

Maybe if you have a shitty job and need more experience in a different field. Or car insurance is too high and you need a discount

unless you are doing something like infantry, how is the military a dumb idea for a 18 year old? One of my biggest regrets in life was going to college after HS because I wasn't mature enough and most people aren't because they are 18 lol.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about not having my degree already. On the one hand, even though I know I shouldn't put pressure on myself like that, I wish that I'd gotten it at least a few years ago. On the other hand, it's like, who the fuck actually knows 100% what they want to do or what they're capable of doing at 18? lol

lmao exactly, you just want to leave your parents house and party at that age

I honestly feel like we should put less pressure on people to do the whole, standard, "4 years of college straight out of high school," thing. I honestly didn't know how common it was seeing people not get their degree until their late 20's or early 30's and still managing to become fairly successful or even more so, while still having families.

exactly!! My parents were those typical first ones to get a degree in family gen xers that shoved college up my ass and off course I wanted to get laid and party lol.

I wouldn't say its pointless or that you have to get rid of your whole life, but like any major career shift, you'll have to make some changes.

I was 32 when I enlisted and already married with children, so its not like I had to sell anything I owned. The biggest change was moving, but that isnt necessarily a bad thing.

Half the people I knew from high school who joined the military came out brainwashed as fuck. Turned into walking stereotypes: bought big trucks, a bunch of guns, joined the NRA, etc.

To be fair they were sort of idiots to begin with. The people who went in smart came out basically the same but used their experiences to do lots of great things with their lives.
