The game is like tons of generic-tasting candy with its tropes, so you can probably predict what is going to happen within the next hour or three of the story, at least until the last third comes along and the game throws one-way time travel at you.

the game is far, far too long, with so much downtime in between events

the english voice acting is atrocious, too, as well as the fuckin text. like i don't know why the localizers decided that every character in every dragon quest game has to be from wales and nearly unintelligible, but it's a bad decision that they need to stop

and the overworld music, dear god why the fuck is it so loud and busy. it's obnoxious, and it doesn't matter if it's the shitty midi's or the orchestra versions, it sucks. dragon quest music is godawaful for overworld.

when you're in the overworld, you want the music to be low key, soft, soothing. what you don't want it to be is if you walked directly into a marching band going nuts while wearing hearing aids turned to MAX. AND IT RESTARTS AFTER EVERY BATTLE. WHY. DON'T FUCKIN' DO THAT. EVER.

It's fun but as the others said it's way too long and feels longer since the pacing is poor.

And I love Dragon Quest. Some may say 11 is the best of the franchise but I'd argue 8,9,5 and even the archaic DQ3 are all way better games.

DQ3 is for straight up masochists, and I say this as someone that absolutely loves SMT:N and Strange Journey.

DQ8 is by far my favorite in the series. I keep trying to love 9 too, but the beginning is just too...something. I can't put my finger on it but there's just something that rubs me the wrong way about it.

The one with Torenko is up there too.

I couldn't deal with it. I got maybe a dozen hours in before I bailed. I like old school rpgs but dragon quest is a series that hangs on to all the worst, archaic parts of rpgs and it feels super clunky and slow and tedious to play to me. Tons of tiny little quality of life user interface issues that other rpgs have solved long ago but for whatever reason dragon quest is stuck in the early 1990s in every single regard.

I played IV too, but I hated it.

The logic behind literally every ending path was a psychotic fever dream.

At least in 3 and SJ, the people offering paths didn't all get together at the same point in the story, do a 180 degree heel turn, and make you pick between several different flavors of wrong that nobody could have seen coming.

Like literally ever canonical ending was distasteful.

I wish we'd get the 3rd Raidou game stateside eventually.

there's literally no excuse for making the same mistakes 20ish years later.

that being said, i really don't hate DQXI, it has a lot of charm.

i just think at this point that DQ peaked at DQVIII.

I think the best DQ story is still DQ4. I enjoy that the progress the villain makes is tied with the goals and dreams of your earlier characters.

I loved the characters in 8, and i actually loved that most of the game wasn't "bridge gated". like, you could just wander your ass into somewhere you really, REALLY shouldn't be early on entirely by accident and there was no indication until you got your ass handed to you by mooks.

like if you're trying to get to the Arena as early as possible, you've got one hell of a challenge on your hands, or you can go do what you're supposed to do like a good boy and not try and break the game with summons early on.

plus, DQ8 felt huge for a very long time compared to many RPGs of its day. Like it was Fallout or Skyrim big in terms of world scale. even FFXII didn't have the same feel of a giant world at the time.

. . . So you're agreeing with me then.

I'm saying breath of fire was clunky and so is DQXI but it is relatively a greater game design sin for DQ because it's much newer but just as clunky.

True, but I'd argue that I still prefer the NES version of DQ1 over the gbc game for a couple reasons:

1) They give you more XP and Gold in the remake. Personal preference but to me this makes the game too short. In the original, it took a while to grind to be able to afford that Hand Axe or Chain Mail and it was so awesome when you finally bought it. I know not everyone will share this sentiment though and that's OK.

2) Some of the enemies have been moved to other zones. Maybe some players didn't notice this, but since I've played the NES game so often it stood out right away. The best example is once I hit level 3 and learned the Heal spell I'd always travel north to Gariniham and fight Magicians that would roam around there. Great XP and gold for the early game. These enemies are not in this zone anymore in the remake, as they've been moved to another zone further away. Kind of a weird decision.

3) File under: "This SHOULD be better, but it makes no sense department"- In the remake they still have the Sword of Flames. Additionally you can USE this weapon in battle and it casts a fireball for no MP cost. Sounds awesome, however by the time anyone can get to Cantlin or get the gold to purchase it a normal attack will outdamage the fireball. So nobody is ever going to use the fireball effect because it's never a better option than just whacking the enemy with the sword regularly.

For DQ1 I fully agree and I even wrote a big giant thesis on the progression design of DQ1... how you balance your volatile and non-volatile assets (gold and xp respectively)

The only glaring problem is that when they designed the game they based your natural progression on trial and error - that a player will gradually overcome the dungeons and that failure was acceptable since gold is only valuable in strict brackets whereas xp always accumulates. As such, if you play the game several times and don't spend any time dungeon crawling... you won't get to the required level 17; you'll only be about level 13.

If you didn't use a map (or drew your own instead of googling/player's guide) then all the bad paths and dead ends in the various dungeons equates to more xp... you actually do get to a high enough level under their original philosophy.
