LOTR hands down best movie trilogy.

Pacing is good, and there's not one single boring part.

But also Tolkien is a terrible story teller. I respect what Lotr did for the genre, and it deserves the praise it gets, but Tolkien has no understanding of pacing, or of showing not telling. He's the absolute king of exposition dumping.

Still an incredibly talented person though.

Watch the extended editions of TLOTR movies and The Hobbit films for more Middle Earth goodness.

If you have finished the main story of Shadow of Mordor play the dlc, and then get the sequel Shadow of War.

The games are extremely loose with the lore, not that I'm an expert. SoW in particular really goes off the deep end in that regard, though. Still, I love it whenever I'm playing/watching something and it inspires me to get back into something else. I could use some of that now.

Yeah Celebrimbor existed and forged the three Elven rings of power but not the One Ring as in the game. Talion is the one who's a creation of the devs.

Celebrimbor is a real Tolkien character, but there are no such things as elven force ghosts and most of whatever else they put in that game. Yeah, it's fanfiction and not even good fanfiction. They didn't even try to fit it with the books or even the movies.

It's from the Fellowship Extended Edition.

Celebrimbor was in the books, his kingdom was outside the West gates of Moria. He forged the three Elven Rings, His kingdom was sacked by Sauron, and was tortured to death after he was captured. Shot with arrows, he was hung from a pole and used as a standard

I assumed talion was sort of like the "aragorn" that they wanted, a lone ranger hero that everyone looks to.

In the movie they said that sauron forged all the rings and gave them as gifts to dwarves and elves and men.

There wasn't a civil war between celebi and sauron though right. Also shadow of mordor and war show sauron's human form (or I guess elf form?) but we never got to see that in the movie. Not even in the ultimate bluray editions.

Sauron does take on an elf form in the lore, calling himself Annatar (lord of gifts) and manipulated the smiths of Eregion into making rings while he himself forged the One Ring in secret and also put a secret binding magic into the others.

Celebrimbor doesn't trust him from the jump and ends up making the three Elven Rings in secret. Sauron finds out, attacks Eregion, then captures, tortures, and eventually kills Celebrimbor.

Such a shame. Also they apparently filmed his death scene, but it was all cut. I think the actor who played Gilgalad confirmed this at a comic con or something years ago.

Yes. So way back in the first age there was a dude named Morgoth. He was so powerful that Sauron was only a Lieutenant of his. Without getting into a bunch of LOTR terminology that I would then have to explain, Morgoth was a god (who had been named Melkor) who was cast out from the place where the gods dwelled because he was evil and tried to taint all of their creation to his own whims. Morgoth could not create anything with his powers, only twist and pervert things that were already created, so when he needed servants he captured some elves before the rest of the gods knew they had arrived in the world, and tortured and corrupted them, turning them into orcs.

To do it justice, it would need to be multiple movies. The Silmarillion, if they can even get it's rights, reads like a history book, and spans millennia

The hobbit should have been one movie. Stretching out a 300 page novella that is basically a children's story into three movies was just a stupid idea.

However I do feel like the metaphysics and lore of Lotr is super cool.

Yep, two Hobbit movies would have been perfect. Could have kept in all of the important story pieces while trimming the nonsense and filler, which probably equaled up to almost a whole movie's worth.

I'd say even that is pushing it. The biggest issue is they tried to make The Hobbit feel like the Lotr movies, and that doesn't really work. While it is a prequel and sets up the events it has much less of a high fantasy feeling to it, and feels more like a fairy tale.

The old Rankin Bass animated version of it is a much better adaptation.

Agreed 100%. Over the past 17 years, I have not managed to witness another movie that gave me the feelings I had when I witnessed The Ride of the Rohirrim and Pelennor Fields for the first time in theater. Just one continuous lump in my throat for the entire hour finale of that movie.

You have Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh to thank for successfully storyboarding an unfilmable book series, and Howard Shore for his remarkable score.

Is the book even really a prequel that sets up the trilogy? I thought the complaint was that the prequel movies desperately tried to set it up so that the events of the hobbit lead to lotr, and like most prequels it was blah.

From what I was told, the hobbit was always a children's book and it was only later that the author conceived of lotr and decided to tie in some elements from the hobbit, namely the protagonist bilbo and the ring being the one ring.

It's very much a children's story. The version that is sold these days is a revised version if the original which sets it up as a prequel.

If I remember correctly the ring was originally just a magic ring with absolutely nothing special about it.

Basically, yes. The only major things that carry over from the Hobbit into LOTR are Gandalf, Bilbo, and the Ring. They name dropped and referenced so many things in the movies just to tie it in more with the LOTR movies. A lot of it was unecessary pandering.
