The guy who posted the video brought it to his school administrators when it happened, and they didn't do anything about it. She got off scot free for using racial slurs back when this happened.

By releasing this video, her acceptance to the University of Tennessee has been rescinded. She's almost certainly gonna be able to go to another college, just not her dream college.

Ngl, as a black man I'd let it go. Four years is a long time to hold on to something like this and people do grow up especially in high school. Now if she was very obvious that she was still a racist that's one thing but it was time to let that go.

On one hand, maybe she had changed for the better.

On the other hand - she shouldn't have said the word in the first place, the video was taken to school administrators at the time and they did nothing, and I would imagine that it would be very frustrating to see a popular girl who's never faced consequences for racist wrongdoings using her platform to do a full 180 and capitalise on a movement that her prior behavior is counter to.

Even if her intentions were good, I feel like it would have felt cheap, like she was clout-chasing with no actual conviction or solidarity with black people considering how she used slurs for them as a trendy saying.

She was 15, an age where you understand the concept of racism, and she used a racist word in a video that she sent out to other people as a celebration of her being allowed to drive. This video was taken to school administrators by a black student who was uncomfortable that this cheerleader was using racial slurs, and they did nothing about it. Years later, the same student who threw racial slurs around posted about George Floyd and how dangerous it is to be black in America and how much prejudice they face, despite her prior actions contributing to the racist culture that disenfranchises black people. So the same guy who saw her get off scot free last time posted video of her saying a racial slur.

She didn't face consequences at the time, and now she is. She's still gonna get a college education, and she was called on something justified. I have no sympathy for her.

It's a word. It's just a word. Saying it does not automatically make you racist or a bad person. The mere utterance of the word should not be seen as a big deal. The context behind the words usage such as whether or not it was used maliciously should be what matters.

Kinda makes me sad these kids dont really get a real child hood because child hood is about making mistakes and learning from them and as this story shows people arent allowed to learn from their mistakes especially as everything is documented in social media / YouTube whatever.

I'm 30. When I was in middle school and high school people used F word (derogatory for gay people) for every insult in the book. Am I a homophobe? No. It's a word that was socially acceptable (It's a good thing it's not and anyone who uses the word in 2020 looks like an idiot). I don't use the word in my adult life whatsoever. It must be weird to be so sheltered that you cannot understand the particular upbringing or community can heavily influence what a kid does or says. There's a certain level where they're just an inborn shitty person (heavy bullying), but otherwise there are traits people grow out of as they age and get out of the bubble that is their family and community.
