So I bought it after I marathoned the Zero Escape games back in April and finally got around to it.

Just finished case.... 4? Where the death was poison.

This game feels like it has jumped the shark. I feel like 2 people TRYING to commit murder before the real cause of death is suicide is officially absurd at this point.

I hear the second and third games are better. Can I just skip to those? It doesnt help the remaining characters are more or less awful

Well, if you wanted to stop because of the absurdity... the games are more or less going to get more absurd.

Oh, or what do you like/enjoy about the first game so far? Because I do think DR1 is the weakest of the bunch, so the other games do get better.

Honestly I've kept playing for the execution cinematics.

I like the logical reasoning also, but this case was by far the worst in terms of everyone basically trying to convince me they were the killer. Come on man. It felt really gotcha

As far as things Ive really not liked is the characters are awful. It bothers me to hell everyone is cool with a serial killer just showing up and running around. So RaNdOm

And the free time sequences are nearly meaningless because nothing ever interesting comes up in them that makes me care about the characters.

I hope these issues are addressed

Oh, well, if it's just the logical reasoning...then I think DR2 and DRV3 are both better in that regard...

And the characters actually try to be helpful in trials, something that the DR1 cast seems allergic to. So you might like them better.

I'd say go for DR2 and just watch an LP for the remaining DR1 trials if you must, though personally I think the final cases are worth it for the spectacle.

I'd have probably said play up to case 4 if you were asking this earlier, but at this point you should probably just stop. It doesn't sound like this series is for you.

Everything about Danganronpa is inherently absurd. Either you get on board with that or you don't.

Well darn.

I think the absurdity of a wise cracking homicidal bear is interesting, but the complete one dimensional characters really puts me off

Case 4 is generally considered the best case in DR1, so it is difficult for me to find a way to convince you to keep at it.

But hey, you never know, stuff may hit for you differently.

There is no rectifying thinking it is too absurd, though.

OOF

Well that isnt what I wanted to hear. Case 4 seemed way too easy to be misleading. For instance I recognized the protein drink was on top of the glass the moment I picked it up which made all of the hubbub leading up to it kind of meaningless because I knew that was a serious contradiction that had yet to resolve itself.

Yeah, if you're upset with Case 1-4 (my pick for the best case in the series), and haven't been enjoying the game up to this point, it's probably not a franchise you're going to enjoy overall.

Most people like the 2 and v3 casts better, but still, quit while you're behind imo

You're basically on the cusp of the endgame and figuring out all the overarching mystery stuff so if that interests you, stick around, you're in the home stretch.

You absolutely cannot skip ahead in this series. Completing DR1 before starting DR2 is a must. The game won't make any sense if you don't do this.

If absurd murders and doing free times are a problem, the series isn't going to get better for you, although I do think the next two games have more interesting casts for what it's worth.

I will also say that the remaining cast of DR1 is indeed awful and never gets worse than this. But I stress that you MUST see DR1 to the end in order to continue the series.

I dont have an issue with free time as much as I find it a total waste of expository space.

like I finished the free time with the one girl who investigates with me and it basically said I learned nothing.

Oh

I will say that I am of the stance that DR1 is just a decent game, while 2 and V3 are among my all time favorite games. I just don't know if it will be for reasons that translate to you.

Not sure why people like 4 so much. It felt so convuluted

1-4 is the only decent case in the first game.

  • 11037 is blatantly easy for English speakers.
  • A bad-ass biker dude flipping his shit at finding out some chick was a dude and clubbing them with a brick is cringy, along with all the Genocide Jack red herring bullshit.
  • Third case was obnoxious misdirection that only served to direct me to the villain in a very obvious fashion.
  • Fifth trial is literally a sham, culminating in <villain> nonsense.
Cases in the other two games are vastly superior.

DR is a series of mostly bad characters, awful trial mini-games and it gets weirder and weirder the further into the series you are.

Current rankings

5>3>2>4>1

You can argue 5 isn't real, but at least it wasn't telegraphed to hell or intentionally misleading. Also I pleasently enjoyed that it was shorter than the other ones. The long comic section at the end of the other 4 was pretty tedious

the answer to the overarching mystery is at hand! it is tedious to get through but yeah, necessary.

dr2's cast is insanely better and as a result the game is a ton more enjoyable imo. the cases are uniformly better than their counterparts too.

This is kinda similar to my kneejerk DR1 rankings, but I've grown to appreciate Case 4 a lot more.

DR1 is just a weird game in general though

1-3 is the only case in the series where I knew who the killer was before the deaths had even been confirmed. It's ridiculous.

If absurdity is a problem, it just gets worse with each game. 2 especially has possibly the worst case of all if you don't like convoluted answers.

Well, the game ending on a cliff hanger like that is pretty anticlimatic. I feel like open ended endings work for some forms of media and not for others, and for detective stories open ended endings suck. The whole point of this was to solve the mystery.

Booted up Dangan 2 to see if it would at least resolve it and NOPE TOTALLY DIFFERENT AT FIRST. I can obviously tell there are enough similarities in some of the character models that I can tell it is related, but really not feeling playing more to figure out what was going on.

Bummer.

I'll probably be bored at some point and pick it up, but pretty frustrating.
