Have you ever put your absolute all into accomplishing a Goal?

Ive been on a path to improve my life. Ive been thinking critically about myself and this just hit me. I dont think Ive ever REALLY gave it my all to accomplish something. I would either accomplish it with less than 100% effort or I would give up on it without really going all out.

Im in my 30s and its crazy for me to think about how I always give subpar effort. Even in things I really cared about, I ne we fully tried.

How common is this? Am I just a lazy guy who doesnt try my hardest or is it rare for people to go 100%? If you did, what did it feel like to accomplish that goal?

Literally once when I was 6, that I can remember anyway

Oh, and the meme response is that the low effort is actually the high effort and one is just confused about something

Like when you can improve something, or think you can, but the thing never gets better and basically the low effort you put into it is actually just the normal effort potential you have

Working in radio and back when I trained a lot hitting 200lbs lean. Did the former for ten years. The latter I couldn't do. I could hit 198 and then just lose weight. 194 was like the most I could maintain.

And I ate a fucking ton.

Long term goals? Not really

Short term, like surviving in a "crisis"? A few times. 3 or 4

you actually might not want to put in 100% because of the diminishing returns on effort. the pareto principle suggests that 80% of your results will come from 20% of your effort. so dont give it your all!

You dont know which 20% though. What if you bust ass doing 80% effort but it was the last 20% that would have mattered?

How do you know you hit 80% or 100%? That is a question that I dont think anyone can answer. Might as well try what you consider 100% which would probably end up being that 80% you are talking about

Sure but when you think about all the goals you want to accomplish in life, why not bust your ass and accomplish far more of them vs barely trying and barely accomplish anything?

Very short term, only as a way to win a smaller battle or to establish a milestone that pays dividends later on. I've lost a lot of weight, achieved 18 months of sobriety, and been vegan for three years, so there have been a lot of huge changes that required discipline but I'm entirely effort-averse. If it took 100% effort for any prolonged amount of time, I'd have given up long ago.

Fortunately, I've been able to tap into the "work smarter, not harder" mindset and for the most part, my success has been a matter of patience more than anything.

Who gets to deem what was trying hard enough, and what wasn't? Should mentally challenged individuals be constantly berated for their failures? What about how much you get burned for failing?

Well the only people that can deem that is you based on your results and the speed of your results. All I was saying is that if I had to pick between the 2 extremes of not putting out much effort with very little accomplishments vs putting out a ton of effort with a lot of accomplishments then I would take the effort route. Thats all. There is clearly a massive gray area in between that.

Also, Im saying these things but that doesnt mean I walk the walk. I have discipline issues myself that Im working on

Always thought it was funny how most people train for a marathon by running for 12 weeks so they can barely complete it and feel like shit at the end. That's the definition of half assing to me

I think most people half ass their goals. That's why everything is "impossible" to everyone and anyone who gets it must be genetically gifted
