Watching the first season

As someone who has become increasingly irritated with anime in general, the constant deadpan self-awareness just kills me

I've heard the manga starts to sort of play it straight after a while though I haven't read it myself. The first season was both hilarious and heartwarming. Still haven't seen the second, I heard the change in animation studio caused some issues.

It is definitely a satire on shonens, that is not an accident.

its still the same, the arcs just start getting longer and longer. Before it would be a new monster or baddie every episode/few chapters, now it is a huuuuuge story with all the heroes and monsters. Saitama still destroys everyone though

They managed to make Superman not boring.
This.

The off-kilter comedy and the slaughtering of manga and anime tropes is what makes OPM so amazing.

It's a sort of affectionate parody of shonen action anime, yeah. But it still manages to have some sincere, heartwarming moments.

I'm so tired of Garou and I've only seen the anime. Hope he's gone from the manga.

Lol not even close, although the monster association takes center stage for most of it

Season 2 basically becomes the very thing that One Punch Man tries to parody from other shonens.

Every time there's this ridiculous drawn-out enemy exposition that ends with Saitama's expressionless "Ok" I can't stop laughing.

Yeah, but then you have moments like Mumen Rider standing up to the Deep Sea King, even though he doesn't have a chance.

And, yeah, its funny to see Saitama just one-shot the monster effortlessly, but then his heroism is shown with some sincerity when he gives up his chance at acclaim to protect the reputations of the heroes that fought and fell. He pretends that he just took advantage of their hardwor in wearing the monster down, so he could steal the kill and take credit and he plays up that facade, so the other heroes look better in comparison. And by extension, the civilians won't lose trust in them and the hero association as a whole.

Thats how it seemed to me, anyway.

Oh he absolutely tries his best to make the other heroes look more capable than they are.

Honestly, the manga does start playing it straight quite a bit. The webcomic is where all the battles are shortened (because ONE is bad at drawing, kind of the reason why he needed a manga illustrator to draw for him) and the focus is on the comedy and punchlines.

This, at least what I've read of it. Not that that's a bad thing though, it's still pretty good.

Ugh why. Just have Saitama punk him and be done with it.
The payoff is very much worth it, just chill.

The S1 finale still irks me. Saitama was clearly outclassed and just got a lucky shot to win.

Nah, to keep it interesting the main character is now just doing random cameo in the manga, it gets old just as fast.

It's like a Shonen anime where they can focus on the character development and plots because there's a guy who gets the fighting out of the way in a few seconds.
