Back in 2008, Snyder gave a revealing interview to Entertainment Weekly about how he sees comic books, superheroes, and his upcoming movie (at the time) The Watchmen.

The Q&A touches on a lot of different topics, but one of the most striking parts of the discussion comes when Snyder talks about his dislike for comics without gore or sex. He said:

You could call it "high-brow" comics, but to me, that comic book was just pretty sexy! I had a buddy who tried getting me into "normal" comic books, but I was all like, "No one is having sex or killing each other. This isnt really doing it for me." I was a little broken, that way. So when Watchmen came along, I was, "This is more my scene."

Later in the interview, Snyder talks about Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, revealing that if he'd been at the helm, he would have gone a lot darker than Nolan did by incorporating prison rape:

Everyone says that about [Christopher Nolans] Batman Begins. "Batmans dark." Im like, okay, "No, Batmans cool." He gets to go to a Tibetan monastery and be trained by ninjas. Okay? I want to do that. But he doesnt, like, get raped in prison. That could happen in my movie. If you want to talk about dark, thats how that would go.

The only reason Watchmen was any good is because he followed the graphic novel almost scene for scene. The dudes clinging to the Snyder Cut of Justice League are peak embarrassing.

He didn't get what Watchmen was trying to say though. Watchmen was a deconstruction of superheroes in a negative light but in the movie they're super cool badasses. That's probably why a lot of idiots were triggered by Rorschach being shown as the bad guy in the Watchmen show.

I like the film more than the graphic novel in many ways, but even I think it was a fluke.

People look at Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen and think he can make a superior version of a subpar/bad film, but that's pretty much the best it's going to get.

He might be even stupider than Michael Bay. And his movies are definitely more boring, somehow.

Watchmen is like the first Jurassic world. Good movies by complete accident. Jurassic world had themes of capitalism and technology being destructive forces leading to the creation of a dinosaur bio weapon that represents the worst of humanity (we want it bigger dangerous and killing).

then Jurassic world 2 comes out and reveals nope this is just bad movies and those themes were completely accidental. Having seen Snyders other work you have to go back and judge watchmen accordingly.

Almost every interesting part of Watchmen's message is from the graphic novel, and the stuff that fails in that movie is Snyder fucking up the story and tone of said graphic novel in one way or another.

Hey now, Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen were all solid.

I wouldn't call any of those good. Watchmen is a betrayal of its own source material that went out of its way to make a way more interesting story into a more mundane superhero tale. Dawn of the Dead I have never been able to sit through despite loving the comparatively slow original there is a reason nobody remembers that movie outside of the scenes from the beginning of the outbreak. Maybe it gets good again at the end?

300 is unquestionably the worse though. I don't think I've ever seen anything that was more style over substance. It might as well have been a collection of video game cutscenes pasted together into a youtube video, the only thing remarkable about it is its aesthetics

I liked the Watchmen movie when it came out, but it really didn't age well. The fact that he beat the Comedian and Silk Spector plot line over the audience's head because he thought the comic was too subtle sours it for me.

Snyder's one strength really is that his movies do a decent job of recreating the visuals to the point that they rip panels from the comics and recreate them. Even Batman v Superman was just a bunch of comics smashed together into some kind of messy plot.

Pretty sure even in the movie his notebook was full of rants about liberals and gay people, so it's a little silly to be offended that he inspired a group of bad people.

Maybe they just didn't see those rants as a bad trait.
