"A San Francisco district is planning to rename a school named after Abraham Lincoln because the former president did not demonstrate that 'black lives mattered to him'.

The president, who is often held up as an American hero for abolishing slavery, is just one of 44 historical figures soon to have their names scratched off schools within the San Francisco Unified School District.

Other names include George Washington, Herbert Hoover and Senator Dianne Feinstein, whose name will be stripped from the Dianne Feinstein Elementary School for allowing the Confederate flag to fly outside City Hall back in 1984 when she was mayor.

[...]

The district's renaming committee decided Lincoln is not worthy of keeping his name on Abraham Lincoln High School because 'the majority of his policies proved to be detrimental to [Native Americans].'

'Abraham Lincoln is not seen as much of a hero at all among many American Indian Nations and Native peoples of the United States, as the majority of his policies proved to be detrimental to them,' the committee meeting notes state.

Under his watch, Indigenous peoples had much of their land taken away from them."

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/san-francisco-lincoln-blm/

A spreadsheet compiled by the committee on schools recommended for name changes made no mention of Black lives matter. The entry for Lincoln instead exclusively pertained to the plight of Native Americans under Lincolns presidency, which included the continued, forced removal from ancestral lands and the mass execution of dozens of Dakota Sioux men in 1862.

Do people really think Abe Lincoln signed a piece of paper and ended slavery using magic or something? The fight to abolish slavery was won on the ground. The proclamation was forced by the people, it wasnt some benevolent gesture by one mythical hero.

In their fourth debate, at Charleston, Illinois, on September 18, 1858, Lincoln made his position clear. I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and Black races, he began, going on to say that he opposed Black people having the right to vote, to serve on juries, to hold office and to intermarry with whites.

Well, that's stupid.

If you're going to strip any honors from any historic figure that did something modern progressives consider questionable, you may as well just name the schools after numbers. Because there are virtually no noteworthy historic figures who don't have some mixed morality in their lives.

Lincoln wasn't an abolitionist, he much like most of the north, just wanted to stop the spread of slavery to the new territories.

Once the South freaked, broke free from the nation, and declared war on the United States he really had no choice.

The narrative that Abraham Lincoln only freed the slaves to spite the South doesn't make sense.

For one thing, he pushed abolition through against opposition and only when the South was more or less defeated. You could say that he was wanting to kick them when they were down, but it doesn't make sense that a man would put his life on the line for spite -- especially since he was so vocal about binding the nation's wounds.

Lincoln is quoted as saying Black people and White people are not equal. If he hadn't gone on record to say that, he never would have been elected. He was a politician. He had to say what he had to say at the time. His actions prove where he stood. Did he believe in absolute racial equality? Probably not. Would have have allowed slavery to continue if it meant avoiding the Civil War? Most likely. Did he believe sincerely that slavery was something that should be ended? Absolutely. If Lincoln hadn't freed the slaves, he would not have been assassinated.

It's a poor thing to try and defame a man who died for a good cause, but that is the nature of politics. The people who want to make Lincoln a villain tend to fall into two camps: godslayers, whose only goal is to bring down the mighty, and individuals who want to you to believe that there's no such thing as a good Republican -- in this generation or any other.

Lincoln certainly deserves plenty of criticism, but yeah he did do some good. Its worth noting that he had a reparations plan (the proverbial 40 acres and a mule, basically) which probably would have helped to heal the wounds of the nation. Unfortunately, Andrew Johnson (his successor) went back on the deal like the traitor he was and gave the land to fucking Confederates.
