Behind *and* ahead, if you count that a lot of sites that adopted them have since moved away from then and many prominent new sites don't use them.

There is a lot of discussion online about how Web 1.0 gave the internet an identity that it no longer has. I really miss those days, and they're not coming back.

Yea. I hate it when forums add too much and it becomes distracting from the posts. The page ends up looking like a collage. And what's the point of a banner anyway?
