There's definitely certain types of rewards that you should collect that will increase your chances of winning. for instance, you should pretty much always go for a hammer.

I usually do. I unlocked Demeter and honestly most of her boons feel pretty underwhelming but it keeps spamming her.

I need to just pick a weapon and stick with it. Fists seem to reliably get me the farthest, but last time I got to Hades I was mostly just spamming Athenas cast orb.

I dont even beat Theseus consistently. Out of those 17 runs, only 3 did I beat him, and two of them I died in the tunnels.

I just bought my third Death Defiance though so that might help.

Sounds like you just need to get more practice in or upgrade yourself more in the mirror. By the time I beat the game the first time, I was pretty much clearing all runs regardless of what weapons/upgrades I chose and heat level. The only times I've failed so far is when I ran into an unexpected boss that took some of my lives and an unexpected additional phase for one of the bosses.

once you've got mirror upgrades under your belt and git gudder, it'll become a lot more reliable.

A lot of fails early on are partially due to making "bad" choices in order to fulfill the prophecy (or figure out what something actually does). But once that hill is crested, you'll be much better.

You get better at cobbling together effective builds as you get more experienced. I favor dash based setups but due to rng I got better at doing caster setups or even Calls. You start to learn what goes together nicely and how to guide builds some.

For instance, Poseidon/Zeus dash based shenanigans are my favorite. Youre borderline invincible from dashing, doing great initial damage, slightly delayed damage and damage over time. Ares dash setup is also pretty good if you get all the upgrades but it's more awkward to use imo.

If you favor fists, I definitely prefer the second form of them. That magnet grab is fucking amazing. It effectively eliminates it's only weakness without relying on hammer luck.

Equip the item that makes Poseidon your next boon giver and take the dash does damage one and keep upgrading it. I've done whole runs just using it.

Also get the boon from Hermes that gives you a extra dash.

Demeter is one of my preferred boons. Stacking freeze and using the ice beams as a cast, combined with some doom boons, you can do a ton of damage over time with little interaction.

Give a nectar to each god boon / NPC and you get a trinket.

I am not sure I have ever been given the option to give it to the boons. Ive got it from all the NPCs at home.

when a God shows up after clearing a chamber, you need to give the gift before accepting the Boon

When you go up to the boon orb, you should have an option to gift it to that particular god before picking it up.

Demeter has the second highest attack multiplier, right after Aphrodite iirc.

Her attack boon was night on the Adamant Rail but I prefer Artemiss seeming arrows for tracking and raw DPS.
