So one of our users sometimes keep getting an error code when using one of our software and it shuts down. Been happening for a few weeks now, the error code comes every now and then. To fix this for the user, we have to end his session within the software and have him restart it.

Anyways, my boss wants me to send the error code to the software IT team so they can fix it. I told him I've dealt with that IT team MANY times and they will not know what to do with the error code. I mean, if a user sends me an error code I won't magically understand what it means and know how to fix it either. I told my boss what they'll want to do is call us, start a remote session with the user with the issue and then try to replicate the error and then go on from there. It's a bit of a process. My boss said fuck that, just send the error code to them.

Sometimes practicality and reasoning can't get to his hard head. Guess we'll have to do what he wants to do and when it won't work we'll then do what I want to resolve the issue.

I'm just trying to be as practical as I can based on experience working with certain people. My boss doesn't see it and won't listen to my reasoning but we're doing what he wanna do so there's no insubordinate.

I dunno man, I work on the IT software end and I would love it if a user sent me an error code before a remote session.

That said I'd want to know everything else too. PC, user rights, windows version, software version, what the user was doing at the time, what time of day it is, what the alignment of the planets is...

If it was always that easy I'd forever take that route. The thing is this certain software company has the belief that it's most likely user error before it's theirs, and I can't really blame them. We have a lot of dumb ass users.

He's talked about retiring for years now and I am up for his position when he does. Hopefully this be the year he retires. I'd love the position of IT Director but it's kinda scary at the same time.
