Strange Journey would be good if the map design wasn't straight-up sadistic ~~and alignment weren't so all-or-nothing~~ . So many aimless mazes, so many traps, ~~the goddamned invisible pathways.~~ Playing Strange Journey is a damned chore, as some one who enjoyed one of the Etrian Odyssey games. Nocturne was my first and I love it, but yeah, from a design standpoint, IV and IV:A blow it out of the water. Like, in Nocturne, you can't even freely swap demons between your party and your stock: you first have to remove a demon from your party, and only then can you add a new one! The fact that ability inheritance is such a black box also sucks, because it doesn't prevent power-gaming: it just means you refresh the fusion until the product gets the load-out you want.
