i'm not a huge fan of the term either, but the idea is that the doctor / your parents assign you a gender (before they can ask) by looking at your genitals.

But I feel that is untrue.

All that is done is look wether you have a penis or vagina. That is not assigning or missgendering. That is literally making a visual confirmation.

The alternative would be not to "assign" anything and let the person decide for themselves.

Doesnt the birth certificate just state "sex" specifically? which from what transgender sympathisers tell me, sex =/= gender with sex being the physical body which is objectively there? So how are you assigned something that is literally there?

Not at all and I've transitioned. Currently undergoing hours of electrolysis to prep surgery sites or whatever. Just imagine for a moment getting a tiny metal prod inserted into the hair follicles along your genitals, then having a DC current running through for a few seconds to kill everything in there. And imagine that for every hair follicle. For hours at a time. Even along the base of the shaft. That's still nothing compared to how uncomfortable my assigned gender at birth.

A lot more of you are eggs than you realize. If you need help or anything figuring it out I'm able to reply to PMs. Just might take awhile, depending on the time of day. Cis people don't think they'd be happier having been born the opposite gender. Even if you end up reconciling it by just growing your hair out and doing your nails, you'll definitely want to try doing something to be more comfortable.

But I also feel like I don't really "fit" the traditional masculinity.... whatever. Like think of something guys are stereotypically into, and chances are I'm indifferent at best.

Cars? Hunting? Sports? I really never had an interest in any of those. When I think about "What is a man?" A miserable little pile of secrets!, I mostly come up with generic stuff like "Is brave, honorable, always keeps their promise, etc" but there's nothing stopping women for doing the same so is that really "masculinity"?

But I don't feel like I'm a woman, and I'm perfectly fine with having a penis. It's just that despite the beard and mustache, I feel like I lean towards femininity.

And if i had some sort of magical sexchange the only thing that i feel would be problematic is the radical difference, as i dont do well with big changes.

Also there is no Gender/Sex divide in my native language, i dont think that has much to do with it (Transgenders are a thing here, not that i know any) but hey, like the sig says, i could be wrong.

I think of gender as a sliding scale from more feminine to more masculine and not a binary, since you can have masc women or fem guys. There are also people who identify as non-binary or as having no gender at all.

not having enough labels doesn't invalidate concepts. sex and gender are not the same thing, and right now the words have different meanings reflecting that. before that, sex and gender weren't the same thing, but those two words both applied to only one of the two things.. before that, sex and gender weren't the same thing, but those two words had different meanings, one of which meant something completely different than it does now.

Similar to how the english word "Cousin" doesnt specifiy boy or girl, but in, for example, Danish theres 2 seperate words depending on boy or girl (like how Sibling is neutral, but Brother and Sister specify)

Not taking a stance here (my previous posts are about the border of what courage i have on the subject), just adding extra info to the discussion.

I don't really think the obstacles of language is the important point here, though. Ultimately we're just trying to acknowledge that drawing a mirror image parallel between your biological sex and your "role" in society has many shortcomings with it being impractical at best, harmful at worst.

I think it's really odd when we have everyone from biologists, geneticists, physiologists, sports scientists, feminists, social academics and linguists all agreeing on the basic point that "nah, these things are different" (albeit disagreeing on the particulars), but somehow certain folk are really hellbent determined to continue saying these things are the same.

I think assigning gender at birth is just a natural starting point that has been with us since the dawn of time.

Transition isn't perfect and it might never be (not saying it won't).

You're born with xx/xy chromosomes and all that entails; you can simply be who you are born as and have the ability to integrate into society and function without having to do anything else (barring genetic defects, disease or whatever else) besides literally being born.

But to some people, a vast minority, this is not an option, because for some reason their birth sex does not match their mental self. Then problems arise, which transition or other coping methods can help alleviate.

So the question brought up by this line of thought is: should the natural and traditional process be abandoned or not?
