They serve no purpose in the animal kingdom in general. They have no natural enemies beyond a few animals that take their babies.

They have evolved to eat something that gives almost NO nutritional value. They seem to have no natural drive to procreate, and we spend millions of dollars to try and basically make 'em fuck.

No, just leave them alone in the woods. If they die, that's natural selection.

Generally speaking, I question the value of taking a zero tolerance approach to extinction. It's something that's happened throughout history, and no matter how perfect our efforts may be, it will continue to happen in the future.

Of course, we should avoid actively contributing to it, and interfering in the case of species important to us (eg. bees) is worthwhile; but yeah - pandas, let nature take its course. Something else will evolve to replace them in time.

what if we clear cut all the bamboo forests around them, and then when the bamboo flowers and dies all at once and they run out of food because we've disconnected the forest tracks and they cant regrow? does that still count as natural selection?

Actually pandas have no problem reproducing in the wild. It's the zoo environment that causes problems for them (and many other species).

All species on Earth have value. They are a living record of millions of years of unique genetic adaptions, and they host many other species.

They are at minimum like billions year old museums. (would you burn down a billion year old museum without even knowing whats in it?)

But at best, they (and the species they help host, which will also die out if 1 dies out) will provide genetic insights for new inventions (and information) useful to us. (not even mentioning for natural beauty)

The other extreme: We could destroy all other life on Earth in theory and just leave 1 plant to make oxygen, 1 more species for food, and us.

It's not natural selection if they die. They are a delicate species true, but they were maintaining themselves for thousands of years until humans fucked up their ecosystem

We are responsible for making them at risk

This is what I was thinking too. Reasons koalas shouldn't even be alive today:

  • They're fucking stupid. Put eucalyptus leaves on the ground in front of them and they don't know what to do with them because they're not in a tree
  • They're poorly equipped for their diet. Their teeth are worn down from their diet, which isn't too uncommon in the animal kingdom. However, animals like rats have teeth that keep growing to combat this. What happens with koalas? When their teeth are ground down they starve to death.
  • They spread fucking chlamydia.
  • They sleep 20 hours a day.

Yes. Human beings are natural animals, and everything we do to the world is therefore natural.
