Seems like for its entire history, America has always had an enemy to hate, to fuel the "us vs them" mentality that is so rampant in most of society.

Bush knew what was up, waging war on people in the mideast, and Hollywood fueling the propaganda machine by making them all terrorists in the movies. Just like how all the villains used to be Russian terrorists. And German Nazi-esque enemies before them.

But now, with the soldiers having been pulled out of Iraq and Afghanistan and what have you... America's attention turned inward and became divided upon itself. An America divided upon itself cannot stand.

I mean for god's sake, there was an attack on the capitol. That was literally something bin laden was going to do.

From the very beginning, "uniting against a common foe" in America's case has always meant that all the racism, sexism, discrimination, etc. is in fact still happening, but every time it is mentioned or considered worth mentioning, it is engulfed by "what is really important right now".

ah, now i get it.

they knew that the troops, having just come home might be a bit bored, so they chose to act as if there was an insurection so there'd be some extra guard duty to keep the soldiers occupied for a bit

Russia is making a surprise unwelcome comeback with the whole putin thing, pretty crazy. It's like they saw how tons of things were being revived from the 80s for a quick buck so they were like "let's reignite the rivalry again"

Just like how in WW2, Going from being warheroes liberating one people to sitting at the back of the bus, to put it mildly.

boggles the mind that this was less than a century ago.
