the bible never addresses masturbation specifically, its just a form of extramarital sex, which is widely shunned. but i think the bigger issue christianity has with it is that masturbation goes hand in hand (no pun intended) with pornography which is very sinful for a number of reasons

It doesn't because masturbation probably didn't exist around that time... or it did but even the authors were like "yeah lets conveniently leave that part out".

The bible does say though that lusting after woman is a sin though, but it was something I greatly noticed that Southern Baptists would be quiet about. At least the Catholic Church stance of "every sperm is sacred" (while hilarious) is consistent at least vs. protestant stances on it.

I remember a bible study group many years ago that discussed this. From my faint recollection of the discussion, the Bible does not explicitly forbid masturbation, but it does explicitly forbid lusting after unmarried women in a sexual way.

The gist of it was that you can technically masturbate (according to the Bible) if you don't use visual stimulation of another person, unless you are married to that person. Not because the Bible condones it, but it doesn't expressly forbid it.

I believe there is one passage that vaguely refers to sexual immorality and many have interpreted to mean masturbation, but that one feels like a reach.

Onan was only guilty in rejecting his duties in a levirate marriage with Tamar by making a last second decision to refuse to impregnate her (levirate marriage is the antiquated tradition of taking your brother's wife in the event he dies without an heir and having a child with her that is to be raised as your brother's successor and not your own).

The main prohibition in the bible is as another has already said: lusting after a woman that is not your own wife.

The closest authority you get on it from God himself concerns a man's emissions that make him unclean. The statement stands alone but the sentence is followed by a line that implies the emissions still come about as activity with women.

So at best you could say it makes one unclean, but immediately after that in the Bible it tells you how to get clean again. So basically, don't choke the chicken and then wander into the temple to perform your rituals. Wait until your clean to go pay your sin offering or commune with God or whatever it is you need to do with Him.

Extra-biblical rabbinic traditions. Early Judaism is all about the growth of the tribe and anything that gets in the way of that is prohibited.

The Mishnah states that if a man touches his penis with his hand (in order to check for ritually impure emission), his hand "ought to be cut off".[9]
The Babylonian Talmud prohibits "emitting seed in vain", a term generally (but not only) referring to masturbation:
R. Johanan stated: Whosoever emits semen in vain deserves death, for it is said in Scripture (Genesis 38:10), 'And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of the LORD; and He slew him also.'[9]
The same passage likens the act to murder and idolatry,[9] and also prohibits a man from intentionally arousing himself:
Rav says: One who intentionally causes himself to have an erection shall be ostracized.[10]
