In a way I almost feel bad for Trump fans. The next year will be difficult as hell as they realize the man will only ever pay lip service, if he even does that, but never actually do a damn thing for them.

I'm sure a fair few will act like he never happened. Like they never sold their own integrity out to support a man whose sole intention at the end of the day was to grift everyone who would buy into his bullshit, and then do exactly what we expected him to do before he eventually left, pardon as bunch of friends or ex-business partners.

I just hope many wake up to the fact that you should never buy into a cult of personality because you'll only ever wind up cutting or burning all ties to people who aren't as deeply embedded into the cult as you are.

I posted some innocent meme to Facebook prior to the election, something along the lines of, "I'm in the 'no kids in cages' party". My brother decided to retaliate, and my friends and I piled on him. He called my friends communists, socialists, kept changing the goalposts, and was acting like an idiot. Then he got mad for being called out, and blocked me on Facebook. Luckily he will still talk to me outside of social media, but I don't think he's going to unblock me anytime soon.

I hope Trump was worth it.

I liked the second half more than the first.

To me it seems like the main reason people aren't out in force for biden and going to rallies and such has less to do with fear and more to do with not wrapping your entire identity around a fucking politician.

I would probably fight my brother if he did shit like that. Would never happen though because he hates trump as much as I do and he wouldn't take a right turn in regard to politics ever. We did have a heated exchange last spring though when we were both staying with our parents due to covid and were both agitated as such. He pulled his knife on me and said "you really wanna do this?" and I had just making a sandwich and had a kitchen knife behind me so I grabbed it and said "do you?" There was a bit of a standoff and I added "this one's bigger by the way" >_>. He stormed outside and I went back to making my sandwich. We were fine later that day. He has always been too quick to bluff lol. In any case, that exchange had nothing to do with politics, but it's a fun story.

Seems accurate. I had to cut off a bunch of Trump cultists from my life over the past year because having them around was detrimental to my mental health.

The casual Trump supporter whos just in it for the tax policies and abortion banning and whatnot like a typical Republican is fine.
The die hard Trump supporter with the MAGA hat, the Trump flags all over their house and cars, the fucking onslaught of pro-Trump propaganda memes they share on social media (I once scrolled through my aunts page out of curiosity to count how many she had shared in a day. I stopped counting at 84 and that was all within like two hours), the constant need to bring Trump into literally every god damn conversation (yeah those Fords built by Mexicans arent as good, Trumps gonna make em made by us Americans again shut the fuck up bro I just said my fucking sunroof is creaking), the bitching about fake news when anything remotely negative is reported about him, the unbelievable hypocrisy? They can get the fuck out of my life forever, and I wont miss them. Theyre completely different people than they were four years ago, like they had their brain swapped with someone else. I liked the old version. The new version sucks ass.

Part of me still wants to feel sympathetic towards some of these people (fuck anyone who ever flew a swastika or associated with those who do). They were human beings with big empty holes in them that the GOP filled negative shit for decades via Limbaugh and his ilk. Then Trump came along and poisoned it even more so. Constantly bombarded in an echo chamber with propaganda, lies, and conspiracy their brains literally melted under the onslaught. All that is left is a cult programmed machine.

It is a cult, there is no doubt about that. The interesting thing is that generally throughout history this level of cult programming, Milieu control if you will, is usually achieved by isolating people physically and then emotionally from everything and everyone. Think religious communes, Jonestown, Heaven's Gate, Branch Davidians. Instead what we've seen here is a sort of mental isolation over a period of decades. Conservative talk radio going back to the early 90's isolating people by spewing hyperbole barely attached to reality, and then telling the listeners that they were the only ones who could see the truth. Then later through Fox News, again spinning a completely skewed, barely recognizable version of reality, again telling the viewer that they were the only ones who saw the real world. Then come youtube videos and podcasts doing the same thing, to the point where some people are literally only consuming this bizarro world version of reality, filled with raging hordes of minorities trying to tear apart white America. Degenerate bands of LGBTQ people trying to corrupt your children. Then a figure like Trump shows up, and promises you that he will save you from all this horror.

I mean if I saw the world through that fucked up lens that a good number of these people did, I would be alternately rage filled and scared shitless as well. How do we fix it? I don't know. These people are legitimately dangerous and completely detached from reality. A good part of me feels that they allowed themselves to go down this rabbit hole, so fuck em. The other part, as I said at the start of this thing, still wants to feel sympathy for them.
