I never finished the original Half-Life. I got tired of crap teleporting in behind me. The game is deliberate in trying to screw the player. I finally got fed up and deleted it.

Postal 3 was terrible. I got about halfway through then I failed a mission because they had a maze in the middle of an escort mission and the AI would get hung up on every little thing. I got pissed and uninstalled it. (Postal 2 is insane fun, and Postal 4 looks good but it's not really even in Alpha yet).

I've never seen the end of Deus Ex: Invisible War. Not the game's fault, but my SO wanted to watch me play it and when I got to Liberty Island near the end he kept wanting me to do it a certain way but I wanted to do it my way and we got into an argument so I just uninstalled the game. I tried reinstalling it and playing it again a bunch of years later, but for some reason I never got around to finishing it.

I have a whole bunch of games I've never finished because I've gotten bored or something would come up and I wouldn't have time to play and then when I try to go back later I can't remember where I was or how to play so I'd need to start over and that's just too much work so I never try it again.

kara no shoujo, a detective drama VN

hit a very delayed dead end after successfully guessing the killer because i hadn't done the "investigation" stuff in the right order and a clue that turned out to be vital just wasn't found. this was like a 5-10 hour delay

Why should I keep playing a game if I'm hating it?
You don't have to, but you also shouldn't come up with bullshit like 'I don't understand why people like this game' when you haven't really played it at all.

I can do what I damn well please, thanks. I think a few hours with a game is more than enough to be able to judge its quality.

And as much as you might like to believe otherwise, first impressions matter. If a game doesn't do a good enough job with grabbing people right out of the gate, you simply can't expect everyone to want to stick with it just with promises of "it gets better later". If you're not going to make it feel worth playing right away, then sorry, but your game just doesn't measure up to alternatives.

Damn straight. This is why professional reviewers only play the first two hours of every game they review. It's the industry standard everyone knows this @Sarcasthma

C'mon now, is that tough guy routine really necessary?

And I'm not sure why you believe I don't think first impressions are important. Of course they're important.

Again, I'm just wondering why you are confused about people praising BotW when you've only played a very small part of it.

PS Thanks for the assist, @Far-Queue <3

Who said I was a professional reviewer? If I get paid for it, maybe I could be convinced to spend more time with a game I'm not enjoying, but I'm sure as shit not going to do it for free. I value my time more highly than that.

Fair enough. I apologize for that.

Because actual quality games are fun to play the whole way through
I definitely disagree with this. A lot of my favorite games have some dull moments.

If people found things like tissue paper weaponry and wildly swerving difficulty curves right out of the gate to be fun enough to play to want to stick with it, great.
From what I've seen, fans of the game love it in spite of these systems, not because of them. There's a lot the game has going on besides those two things.

That being said, I have forgetten about games before, or got bored of them. And I've also had times in the past when I was playing too many at once. While that can still happen, being able to take my switch me has made that less of a problem. Also, not being with my friends 24/7. Though, that's only because I had to move halfway across the country for work. I'd rather be with them... And a few that were really hard, and I couldn't get past something. But that hasn't happened for a long time...

That being said, I have actually quit games on PC for being hard, then picking them up for switch and doing much better...

Doesn't that depend on how long the game is?

However, Cuphead is hard as fuck and I can't make it past the second islands, let alone beat the game, no matter how hard I try.

Have you tried getting help via multiplayer? Or lowering the difficulty?

Lots of people say that the problems I had with the game get better toward the end. I say that I'm not willing to wait that long. From my understanding, it's not a small game.

It's not a small game. But like adjl said, you don't have to get to the end for it to get better. Early on, it got the point I wanted weapons to break because there were so many weapons to try out. And lots of costumes to help with exploring. And all kinds of fun stuff to do, and places to explore...

Really? Most tutorials feel about the same to me... Though, I probably liked BotW's more than the other open world games. There are some other games that have amazing tutorials, but I can't think of them right now. But I definitely remember some that I've talked about with friends and saying that I love it. But tutorials aren't usually a good representation of a game...

Weapon breaking has some imperfections of course but the game would be way more boring if you just equipped the strongest thing all the time. I think some people expect too many previous Zelda game traits and if you do that you're missing the point. Now I understand maybe that isn't the game some people wanted regardless but given how much people also used to complain about Zelda getting stale, there really is no pleasing everyone.
