It's surreal when I visit my parents and they happen to be watching TV and I see commercials for what's on and I'm just like "I've never heard of literally any of this"

TV is only good for background noise for whatever else you're doing on a laptop.

It does feel surreal, but then again local radio still exists. I was a radio DJ for a college in a BIG city. I was able to play video game music on the radio in the middle of the day. One of the most rewarding experiences ever.

Older forms of technology can still be rewarding. Also, nothing like going to the library and just finding random books to browse. I know basically everything has a pdf file out there somewhere, but still nothing like going to a library.

Playing physical games at this point is dated. I have a CRT TV hooked up to my old consoles. Yeah, there's other ways to play the games. Yet, I still prefer the traditional way when I can.

Network television I can imagine does the same thing for a lot of people.

Library is a game changer if you like books and comic books. The money saved alone is crazy.

It has its place. Heck, I still have cable, if only because it was like a $5 add-on to my internet service. I have like 4 streaming services but sometimes I don't want to have to decide what to watch (and Netflix's random player sucks). It's great when I come home from work and play whatever's on while I prepare dinner. Usually it'll be a movie or TV show I wouldn't normally watch if I had the choice on streaming, so it's a way to catch something new while not being too invested in it (and I can turn it off if I have to go without missing out on much).

But gone are the days where I would rush home to catch the newest episode of my favorite show live on TV. Watching new episodes of network/cable TV on Hulu in my own time is amazing and I can never go back.

A LOT of people still watch regular tv. Streaming services are ok but then if you want to watch a certain show then you have to find a streaming service that has it.

With my cable subscription i have access to HBO Max,ESPN U,Showtime Anytime and a few other streaming services for free.

Pluto TV and Tubi TV are cool though especially for older tv shows and good for background noise.

I don't have cable or any other type of cable programming subscriptions like Sling or etc., but I keep my TV pretty much on one local channel for background noise, but I'll change it over to Fox/MSNBC for sports as background noise on weekends because informercials make me catatonic.

That's about where the concepts capped out, actually. Every time I browse the schedule on Sling or visit my parents, it's just reality TV or Law and Order/CSI-esque dramas, both of which are exclusively demographically for middle-aged people.

It's like when various outlets declared it to be the golden age of television in the early '10s when quality shows began airing on cable, and streaming shows kickstarted it. A lot of people complained "what golden age, it's nothing but trashy reality shows", when it's grown so much beyond that.

Streaming apps/devices and wifi are finicky, and the remotes suck. If you dont have much tolerance or knowhow for troubleshooting its nice to have cable. You hit power and you got TV coming in. No loading or buffering, no login, etc.
