There's literally no narrative to push you forward. The story is so paper thin in souls games that you are just essentially running through a random world killing random enemies for no reason. Also that wasn't actually Smough either because he stayed behind in Anor Londo to defend Gwyndolin from Aldritch and lost his life doing so, and the one you fought was an illusion just like Ornstein.
