This isn't true. The burger or sandwich by itself is cheaper than the meal, but considering what you get with the meal thats a better deal even if more money.

Where are you getting your burgers? I usually never get a drink, I just order the burger and a side because I usually have my own drink with me already. But I've noticed that I save like $2 by getting the burger and side individually with no drink than I do with the full meal.

At Culvers, my go to for fast food burgers because they have the best fast food burgers, I just go for the double instead of getting a single with the meal

The markup on the pop and fries is way bigger than on the burger.

A 6 dollar burger might cost em a few bucks to make. The fries and pop for an extra 4 bucks is literally a potato, salt, and sugar water with a total value of maybe 40 cents.

Any meal at any restaurant is going to be cheaper to make at home. And shaping and seasoning ground meat and cooking it yourself and then doing dishes isn't easier than paying some money and having it served to you with no effort on your part. Some of it is laziness, some of it is people don't have as much time. And, especially for fast casual joints instead of actual fast food joints, some places can just be a cool hangout spot for friends to get together at.

It's like buying your own beer and spirits and having a get together at your house is cheaper than going to a bar but people like to be social and in public.
