Why would the lender have to cover anything? They're the ones losing money because the borrower can't pay.

I have no idea how this works. But if they borrowed stocks they dont own, then dont they need to repay the stocks to someone? Like in my uninformed mind I imagine lets say Robinhood grabbing stocks from its users to lend them (similar to how banks lend their users money). Or does the lender had like millions of stocks that were actually theirs? If it is the latter, how can they even short more than 100% stocks?

Because doge, unlike many other cryptos, has an insane amount of supply, so much so that it could never realistically reach anywhere above $1

it was also created as a meme and has 0 usability

Even being aware of this Im still in for this pump and dump. How high does everyone expect it to reach if realistically itll never hit $1.

I have GME. You decide to short GME, so you 'borrow' GME from me and sell it immediately for 4$. Then, when GME drops down to 2$, you buy it and give it back to me, and pocket the other 2$.

However, GME burst to over 100$. You now still owe me my stock in GME, so you have to buy it back at some point. The longer you wait, the higher the stock goes because people are buying GME like crazy. You have two options

1) Suck it up and pay the obscene amount and return my stock

2) Try and wait for GME stock to go down some, taking the risk that it won't go down, and could go up even higher.

This the position that Melvin Capital is in.

Because if it becomes the default/dominant crypto instead of bitcoin, it's unlimited supply will also guarantee it will be far less volatile and actually, you know, have a chance of being real currency as it will be worthless to invest in because it's just another form of money like dollars. Is there any point hording dollars? No, they only depreciate.

Completely new to stocks, not sure what I am doing. I want to just buy 1 GME to see how tomrrow goes. I went to fidelity and have an open order, but it made me set a limit? So I have an order with a limit set at 195 (since at the time of doing this it was at like 193) for 1 share. I tried to buy a fraction earlier but it made me buy at least 1.

What I don't understand is what if the price per share exceeds 195 when my order goes through in the morning what happens? Does it just cancel or what since I can't get a fraction of a share?

Thanks. In the real world:
  1. Who is lender? Was it really different random people that over time decided to lend millions of shares?
  2. If Melvin goes bankrupt, are these people screwed?

  1. Brokers around the world. Your broker might decide to do it for example without you knowing, if it's a person. There might even be shady doings going on with the apps themselves, who might have loaned the shorts to people. At one point there were 140% short ratio, meaning more shorts than there even is stock (!!!!!) I'm not great on the specifics though
  2. Very much so indeed. They're already considering bankruptcy aka no liquid assets left

If Melvin is bankrupt then they cant pay the brokers. How would brokers then give you back your shares when you decide to sell? They still need to pay you right? Because they grabbed your stocks without your consent.

This is why shorting can be dangerous. A lot of brokers have this stuff in fine print when you sign with them, I'm guessing.
