Goku seems to want to abandon his family whenever possible, Vegeta only did that once and has been a firm family man ever since.

I think in Super, this is true. But I think that narrative is way overplayed in DBZ... he actually spends most of his time in DBZ with his family, aside from when hes dead. Goku starts his family right after his fight with Piccolo at the 23rd Budokai. After that, here is his timeline...

5 years: All offscreen, but seemingly an at home dad who trains nearby and is with Chi Chi and his newborn son, Gohan.

Raditz: An alien from outer space shows up out of nowhere and murders Goku (technically, Piccolo kills him, but its in the fight with Raditz)

1 year: He is dead, and needs to spend his time in the afterlife to save the world from an impending doom.

Nappa & Vegeta: Fights them. Gets brutalized.

1 month: His 5 year old son goes into space while he is immobilized in the hospital. Some senzu beans finally heal him, and he goes into space to save his son.

Namek: Arrives there after about a week. In one day, the remaining story with the Ginyu Force & Freeza takes place. Gohan is wished back to Earth. Goku barely escapes into space and randomly goes to Yardat, since his escape ship was programmed to go there.

Roughly 18 months: We really dont know how long Goku was traveling in space during all this time. He says it took all his time while on Yardat to learn how to teleport, but that could have been anywhere from a few weeks to a year. Either way, this could be seen as the first selfish moment of Goku to remain away from his family... but he was definitely drifting about in space for a chunk of that time.

3 years: He spends the next 3 years training at home with Gohan and Piccolo. It is implied that he is with his family this entire time.

Coma: He is in at home (and later, Roshis) for an undisclosed amount of time in a coma from his heart virus. Chi Chi is with him this whole time.

Roughly 10 days: He is largely with Gohan this entire time. They train for a year (within less than 24 hours of real time) in the Room of Spirit & Time, and after that, he is with his family.

8 years: He dies vs Cell, saving the planet in the process. Remains dead for the safety of the planet and his loved ones, as the God of the Galaxy thinks that Goku presence attracts strong foes.

Buu: Comes back for a day. Intended to spend it with his friends and family, but a universal level threat shows up. After going back to the afterlife, spends the rest of that time with Gohan on Kaios planet.

10 years: After Buu is defeated, he seemingly spends the next 10 peaceful years with his family, and seems to form a particularly strong relationship with his granddaughter, Pan. Leaves at the end of the story with Uub to train with him. But in a story where these characters can fly around the world in minutes and Goku can teleport, it doesnt mean he stops seeing his family. He just flies with Uub towards Uubs village.

This is why I respect Vegeta more, yeah he did some horrible things but to have a guy like that decide he actually wants to have a family and regrets his evil deeds is a great character arc.

Goku is just an annoying man child who only loves and sticks with his family when its convenient. He might be on the side of good but it does not change that he is a bad husband and a worse father.
Your generous, I dont consider Goku on the side of "good." He has time and time again shown he doesn't really give 2 shits about the side of good when he wants to have fun.

Dude literally and purposely gambled the life of millions if not billions away on a selfish whim to have fun fighting in Super. Toriyama also has stated Super was a correction to anime writers trying to paint Goku as heroic.

It's simpler than that.

I pretty much stopped being a Goku fan when I was a teen during the Buu saga, when he shot a kameha-wave to Fat Buu, and Buu bounced it off to a nearby City, and he was like, oh well. Babidi pointed it out too.
