Hayao Miyazaki's new final film is also a Ghibli production, but I think its going to be in 2D, I believe, but as of last May, still has "years of animation to be completed". Hayao turned 80 a few weeks ago; its not out of the question that the film could be a posthumous release.

Why are they doing this?

Because there are multiple animation crews at Studio Ghibli working on projects and this one in particular chose 3D because it was cheaper and not as strenuous.
Miyazaki's team is currently working on a traditional 2D movie however, I think when he really retires the studio will move on to 3D seeing as he likely doesn't have a protege or apprentice to keep up the tradition.

His son did legends of earthsea right? I thought that looked ok. Shinkai is the "next" Miyazaki, but his influences are very different.

Hayao said he sees this as something that can compete with Pixar. It's sad that 3D animation is cheaper and easier so it's naturally going to become dominant, but when you see some of the shoddy 2D shit being made now, it's probably for the best. Even the high end 2D anime like Violet Evergarden is composite with a lot of 3D. It's the same reason 2D fighting games are becoming 3D graphics in a 2D plane now. It's simpler, cheaper, and the skilled 2D animators are becoming rarer.

this is my fear. Ghibli are special because of their particular 2D style. As everyone moved to cookie cutter 3D they stayed 2d animated and unique.

they clearly dont have what it takes to do proper 3D, and even if they did, itd make them just some small studio trying to compete with the likes of Pixar.

see ghibli as SNK, 2d animation as 2d fighting games and this 3D fiasco is equivalent to the neo geo 64 and its horrible polygon games that were never successful

It doesn't look THAT bad.

My understanding is that a lot of modern Studio Ghibli movies vary stylistically. Ponyo looks a lot more cartoony than Spirited Away, and Princess Kaguya is in a whole league of its own. The screenshot in the OP looks like a miniature diorama, with details like the bottle lending to that atmosphere and the sheen of the goop that's on the whisk adding a level of detail that really sticks out.

From Ocean Waves to Grave of the Fireflies to When Marnie Was There, Ghibli movies vary in style and tone. Like Princess Kaguya, this is an experiment in style and I'm willing to see what comes of it.

Saw the trailer. It's no more heretic than Ocean Waves, or their other lower budget 90's output.

I think it'll do well among kids, the animation and themes will be more dynamic than the current reception seems to indicate, and while it won't be a Studio Ghibli Masterpiece it'll likely be received well enough. I get where the consternation might be coming from, but in motion, I think it's a cut above some dogshit like the CG remake of the first Pokemon movie.

maybe the story will be good, but the animation is worrying.

One of the things about Ghibli movies is just how alive and in motion everything seems to be. But this...everything is so plastic and static. It lacks that sort of living quality that makes their 2D movies so nice to look at.

I get that this is like, their first cgi movie. But its a really rocky start.

I think the big issue is clashing art styles. The characters and the world itself seem like a huge mishmash of different styles. For example, the stew the cook is making along with the pot it is in (the overhead view at 0:10) looks too photo realistic compared to the characters.

Tell you what - Garden of Words is only barely feature length at 45 minutes. I understand being put off by his worse stuff, I saw his early indie movie and I wasn't impressed - even though he animated and voiced the entire thing by himself. But if itd

The Garden of Words was one of my favorite anime movies as a kid, the soundtrack is great and the animation is on a whole other level. I can't speak for the Children who Chase Lost Voices, but I love the Garden of Words so much I actually bought a physical copy of it on DVD.
