Yup.

And as someone that has congressional friends (reps and staffers), being a non-voter (and especially not registered) is the quickest way for politicians to basically ignore any complaint you have if you write in or sign a petition.

Depends. There is a difference between not voting out of laziness / apathy, versus not voting because of an active decision that you don't / can't support any of the options.

What's the difference?

If someone chose not to give a shit at election time, but now starts ranting (as an example) "Biden's crap, Trump would've been way better, why did they let Biden get in?", they don't have a right to complain because they had the chance to vote for what they support but chose not to.

If someone feels that every option - not just Trump and Biden, but also including whoever the minor parties ran this time, Kanye, etc - was no good, that's another matter. It's not that they chose not to give a shit, it's simply that no one was worth voting for - and in particular this doesn't take away that they could have genuine complaints about whoever does win.

By much the same token, there's no obligation to blindly support or always agree with whoever you did vote for. This might be different in cases where you can vote directly on the issue - it would be stupid to vote no on cannabis legalization then complain "why is weed still illegal?!", but not so much so to vote for a politician who's stance on that issue you disagree with (while agreeing with a lot of their other points) then complain about the specific issue. EDIT: And even then, you could vote yes but not agree with the exact implementation, I guess - perhaps you support the overall legalization process, but disagree with how many shops should be allowed per city or something like that.

Should note - I do live somewhere that write-ins are not a thing. This likely influences my exact thoughts here - when write-ins are an option, I have to admit it would be a bit hard for someone to not be able to find any suitable option. Still, I won't outright dismiss that it's possible.

When you're a socialist and the options are fascist and corporatist there's not much use

Or local elections, where the incumbent wins by 80% every time

The "it's your duty!!" crowd have a naive view of the US imo

I know a guy who's the world's biggest knob, always going on about how science is now bought out and pushes political agendas, that masks are the government being tyrannical and the covid vaccine does more harm than good because there's no way they could've made one that fast.

He's basically fully Q'd. And he also says voting is a scam so he doesn't do it.

Sometimes, problems solve themselves.

Hope you vote in every state and city election where you live as well. Also hope you make sure to read every important piece of information before you do. Otherwise, don't you ever complain about anything your city or state does.

I think it's stupid that we have a system that makes it a competition to manipulate more people than the other and I'm not playing along. "Yay, this guy manipulated me more and convinced me he's a little less shitty then the other most likely old white man candidate". This definitely isn't fixed on any level :D

When I consider voting for a candidate, I ask myself a question.

"Do I trust that this person will not use their power to harm innocent people?"

If the answer is "no", I can't bring myself to vote for that person. I will not help give power to a person that I do not trust.

The answer is always "no".

Maybe one day that will change, not holding my breath though.

So out of every single type of election, you can never find anyone to vote for. You may want to rethink some things.

Imagine if you have a candidate for president who has completely ignored a particular disadvantaged group that is part of his base during his campaign, because he takes their vote for granted.

Then, he ends up losing the election by a razor tight margin. And in the statistics, they see that only about 30% of people in that group voted at all. If more of them had voted, he would've won. But he didn't win, because he took them for granted.

Wouldn't that particular scenario encourage the candidate's party to pay more attention to that particular group in order to keep them interested in actually voting?
it probably should. but... well, it doesn't.
