Deep downtown? Not super bad. Once you get to the surrounding neighborhoods is when you see the blight.

Drive down grand river for the full tour and end in brightmoor. Its not good

I only knew about some of the light industrial areas and surrounding areas circa 2012.

That answer was very, very, not good.

Other areas and more modern I couldnt say.

My girlfriend and I had a bunch of cheap vacations planned last year to cities we could fly to for $99. Detroit was the only one we got to before the pandemic started.

As a total outsider tourist I didn't think it was that bad, but there were a few things that made me pause. We had one rideshare driver that panicked when a panhandler came up to the window and asked for change. I don't know if it's because it was winter and cold as shit and unusual there that time of year (in Texas you just expect this at every stoplight), but I was convinced this guy thought he was gonna get carjacked. Maybe it really is like that out there.

The core downtown is beautiful, and the suburbs are extremely rich. The area in between looks like Gaza in some parts, and like Cleveland in others.

Idk that there's anything to be said that paints a clearer picture of just how bad Detroit is than that: you can buy a home for under $2k.

Thats insane. Honestly, it sounds like you can grab a home in the middle of an empty neighborhood for an insanely low price. Sounds like you can do that and bank of you can get a job there that pays the same. Of course, Im completely ignorant so that might be a poor idea

Lack of facilities, lots of homeless/squatters, lots of crime - you'd be an easy target and get robbed like every day. There's a reason why that land is so cheap.

From what I've seen not that bad just kinda deserted at times and some rough looking buildings but other parts are really nice. Downtown looks like a Nostalgia 1930s version of NYC in certain parts

What those stories tend to leave out, though, is that many of those homes (and some are sold for even less, like in the hundreds) is that they often have tens of thousands of dollars of unpaid property taxes (and possibly other fees).

Detroit's riverfront is nice and could be better. Many efforts have been made to revitalize the city. Corruption is one reason for the failure. System issues are also a factor. Detroit is a city with so much potential and so little progress.
