Tom Carney, 29, prostituted himself for a bottle of vodka on Valentines Day 2019 at the home of David Phillips, 76.

A witness saw Carney later return to the house in Neath, south Wales, in a fit of rage, smash through the front door using a concrete garden ornament, then stamping and jumping on the victims head.
His injuries were so bad that pathologist Richard Jones described Phillipss skull as being grossly distorted.

Prosecutor Patrick Harrington QC said Carney: Deliberately inflicted the most vicious, sustained, and brutal attack on his victim, and by so doing in a controlled manner and fuelled by anger chose to end another persons life.

He added that Carney previously had a promising sports career in front of him but was now: One of those might-have beens.

Carney claimed Phillips was his sponsor at Alcoholics Anonymous and had offered to help him after a relapse. He also said that Phillips abused his trust by drugging and raping him. Carney was jailed for 15 years after being found guilty of murder. During the trial, it emerged that Phillips was a paedophile with history of sexual offending against boys and young men.

At the time he was killed, he was subject to a sexual harm prevention order after sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy in Neath. Neighbours described him as a man who kept himself to himself and said that he regularly received visits by young men who went to his flat by taxi.

At his sentencing, Judge Paul Thomas QC said Carney had been effectively prostituting himself for alcohol. The judge said Carney got a reward of a bottle of vodka for the sexual favours but then felt great self-disgust which turned to rage against Mr Phillips.

After the sentence, Emma Myles of the CPS said: Tom Carney admitted he was responsible for the death of David Phillips but denied any intention to kill him or cause serious harm.

However, the evidence of this shockingly violent attack suggested otherwise. We are grateful to the witnesses who came forward and gave evidence in this case, allowing the CPS to deliver justice for Mr Phillips.



Well that's horrifying on multiple levels.

I was going to make a joke regarding the meme about whether UR lives in the UK but it would be in horrible taste after reading all of that. I'm glad I did read first because if I made such a joke without doing so and then later went back, I would feel like a complete asshole. But yeah, so much going on here. Both were victims but both did horrendous things. Highly unfortunate that any of the events described happened :(
