My max temps over a ~90 minute session of Battlefront II were 78 (172) for my CPU and 72 (162) for my GPU

Is that normal?

They've never gone that high before, nor so I was a bit suspicious

might be a good idea to dust your PC if you're noticing a temp change. maybe even replace thermal paste if its been a few years. either way the temps are fine though.

Yeah, those are fine. You could probably do things to get them lower, but temps in the 70s are absolutely normal. I wouldn't worry unless you start regularly hitting 90+ temps.

It's been a year, but a dusting is due. I try to do it every 3/4 months.

It's also possible that I just haven't played this taxing a game before lol. I don't really do multiplayer games

Out of interest, what steps could I take?

Ya Sounds good to me too.

Cpu and gpu were designed for high temperture use.

I believe Overheating occurs when theres heat issues that force shutdown to protect cpu, components, gpu.

I had my rx 5700 xt run in 80s and 90s during the armpit of summer and leaving my computer running all day and night. Ididnt realize i had custom fan settings enabled were 0rpm were made in all temps. I messed around with amd adrenaline settings. Didnt need to but i wanted to see what each did. I played my games normally in 2k max settings.

I thought my fans werent working. Did fan test on TRIXX and lo & behold, heard the fans wind up and down. I had no issues on computer until i discovered that fan setting was enabled. I have it set to default fan settings now.

Computer is louder but eh, whatever...just glad i didnt fry anything.

If your temps are suddenly higher than before, then as monkmith said, dust out the inside of your PC, paying special attention to the fans and heatsinks for your cpu and gpu. Also, clean off the dust filters if your case has those.

You can also replace the thermal paste and see if that helps.

Adjust your fan speeds. If they aren't reaching 100% when your system is under load, then that can help your temps at the expense of more noise.

Beyond that, improving the airflow world help, but that would require buying a new case, or upgrading/adding case fans.

GPU is fine but that's pretty hot for CPU even under load. I'd check for dust clogs in the heatsink and maybe reapply thermal paste.

Yes. Anything under 85 is considered normal. Over 85, you're going to want to do more for cooling. This can be cleaning out dust, re-applying thermal paste, buying a better CPU cooler, adding case fans for more airflow, etc.

unless you've got a PC store nearby, then yeah. dont buy the gallium crap, its for extreme overclocking and its conductive so you can brick your system. go for arctic brand since they're well known and consistent. silver or MX4, not sure which but either will do.
