It wasn't a blown fuse/breaker it seems since we looked/flipped em all, and the rest of the house has normal power too.

And there doesn't seem to be a power outage anywhere on the street

It's just my particular area of this house.

Wtf

Probably an open neutral in a junction box, by the sound of things.

A few questions:

- Are your 220's functioning (cooktop, oven, dryer, water heater, etc)?...

- Do your plugs and lights have their own circuits (based on the labels at your panel) or did they jerry-rig it by lumping both of the plugs and lights together like they did in the old days?

Not entirely sure on that, I don't own the property. It's a fairly new breaker box from the look of it.

Everything everywhere else in the house seems to work. Appliances included. Oven works, microwave works, the freezer/fridge work, and we're still getting hot water. Just tried em all.

The house is fairly old. Whoever wired this place didn't think to label anything on the box. From what I can tell, it seems like lights and plugs are together.

That's good, all things considered. That means the problem isn't at the meter base or at the panel where one main power lug may have gotten loose, basically eliminating half of your power.

He's talking about those arc-fault breakers (I detest those things, but they're a necessity to prevent a potential fire). They're basically fancier breakers where if it trips you'll notice a colored prompt on the breaker where the little lever is set on its neutral position. You may think it's on, but it's actually off. You'll have to manually switch it off and then flip back it to its on position if that's what it was. Try that and see if it works.

Those things trip if the the wire overheats for any reason

No need to call an electrician just yet.

If they triggered once you reset the breaker on the panel you might need to also hit reset on these guys.

They're usually used in locations where water and moisture are prominent, not in bedrooms. However, I wouldn't put it past that doofus of a leadman to installs those at the beginning of that circuit if he didn't even bother to lable the Goddamn panel.

If you can't find the outlet with the buttons on it, you need to figure out which breaker it is (by virtue of being the only one that doesn't turn something else off), and leave it off until you can get an electrician to look at it.
It's probably an outlet hidden behind some furniture, but you definitely don't want a fire hazard otherwise.

I had a light, PS4, and TV going

I left the room to grab something from the oven, which I shut off. Then I went back to the other room and noticed the power was out there.

At the same time my roommates had the TV and lights on in the floor below

I should add that those three rooms are on different things. So I don't think it was an issue of overloading anything.

Yes. If your meter base is rated 300 Amps then you should have double main feeders from it to service two 200 amp panels.

Hell, you can have sub-panel (60-100amps) coming from a 200 amp panel as well.

I only ask cause we tested the main box to see what exactly was tied to what and we got a few rooms with lights and outlets that just weren't attached to any switches in there.

The thing is we don't quite know where the other box might be because we're a house of technically incompetent artsy types. We've flipped off what we don't need on the suggestion that Questionmarktarius raised.

We did get to one switch in the box that wouldn't flip one way or the other. Just kinda hangs out in the middle. Not on or off. If you tried to push it either way it wouldn't stay. We're pretty confident that that belongs to the area giving us trouble, but we can't be sure.

Yeah, the house itself was built in the 30s or 40s, and a great deal of the stuff here was last updated in the 80s or early 90s. A lot of the outlets in the place are pretty old too.

He stated that it was

otherwise call in an electrician to trouble shoot

We're trying to save him a few bucks before it comes to that. lol But it looks like he might have to at this point. I can't diagnose the problem from here since I'd have to revise the work done there.

you can also get a meter and see whats hot and whats not

He also said that he's not very handy... like, at all. <_<

That's the breaker that's tripped. When it trips it kind of hangs out in the middle. It doesn't flip itself into the off position. If you can't switch it to the off position and then back on, then something is actively tripping it. If nothing is plugged in one of the dead outlets then you need to call an electrician.

I made sure to unplug everything as soon as this all started. So something is still tripping it then? Not to sound stupid (too late) but uh am I in danger rn lol

Nobody plugged in a heater?

If the breaker is tripped then the power to the damaged area should be off. So you should be safe. I'd go try to turn that breaker off again and if you can't then just leave everything alone until the electrician gets there tomorrow. Never hurts to make sure the smoke detectors are working though.

He seemed to be under the impression that one of the objects I had plugged in had a dead circuit. He checked the lights and everything else and nothing seemed to be causing a problem.

Then he literally flipped the thing on the breaker box and everything came back on. Which embarrassed the fuck outta me lol. I have no idea why it didn't work when I did it. Literally the same switch with the same motion and level of movement applied.

I tried testing all my electronics to see if they got a dead circuit or w.e. and the power wasn't tripped again. So I have no clue what's going on.
