Thats because bioshock infinite was reduced radically and changed from scratch from its inception. The game is NOTHING like the trailer we saw.

rapture and Columbia were meant to connect through the tears. There is still a small remnant of it in the game, when youre taken to rapture and you can see a little sister and big daddy in the background . Also there is a kick ass Easter egg where you can hear the giant bird, whatever its name was, drowning in the original bio shock

Here is another hint of how badly the game was cut:

many mini-boss characters have massive amounts of voice overs. Like, 6 minutes worth of it, for example:

why waste the resources to come up with these awesome and creepy voice overs for a character (s) you barely interact with other than a gun fight scene?

its obvious they planned much more for them

I honestly think infinite doesn't get enough hate for being a terrible game. Not just a disappointing one, but rather a straight up terrible one. I'm not even that invested in the bioshock series and even I felt disappointment as I was playing this game, realizing that it was literally just a shooter.

I remember that one 2011 trailer, E3 or otherwise, that made the game look unbelievably fantastical, with the girl having transdimensional powers woven into the story/gameplay, and the bird was actually a boss or something, not just a freaking cutscene setpiece.

i liked infinite, but I can tell its not 10% of the game it was supposed to be.

probably because the devs got too ambitious. They made the best looking game of its generation (bio shock) and they introduced all of these awesome mechanics that were new and exciting. They thought they could do it all.

bio shock infinite was supposed to be their masterpiece: a massive game that would somehow connect to bioshock 1/2 and system shock. The game would have a poignant political commentary vs old timey racism and religiosity, and the game was going to play like a giant cutscene.

time, money and system limitations resulted in all of that not happening, and some characters were even changed drastically in mechanics (eg the ghost character and the boys of silence). Certain powers that be didnt like the critique on racism/zealotry so they toned it down and introduced Vox to have a bOtH sIdEs element to balance it out.

Calling it a terrible game is an exaggeration as well. Its just a slightly above average game for the time. Wouldnt have scored as well if it was released today

I didn't play it right when it came out, but I played it before the second game was out. Tbqh the only thing I really liked about the first Bioshock was the setting. I didn't even like the story much

The only new gen FPS I had played before bioshock were halo and Medal of Honor.

They put me to sleep. Bioshock seemed so much cooler at the time to me.

Appealing to game journalists is a fallacy. It's the biggest example of a game that wowed people with its initial flashiness and shocking twists before they realized looking back just how flawed and lacking of substance both the story and gameplay is. The "wait a minute that card" video pokes fun at how absurdly pretentious reviewers were about it.
