The SMT games people are mentioning are made by the same people, but are more apocalyptic and cut out the high school stuff. Chrono Trigger-like time travel components, with a Bravely Default-esque battle system It's very good and although there's elements from both of those games it still manages to carve out it's own distinct niche as a solid game you can play without needing a reference to another. The ending legitimately made me cry. To get the true ending you just have to make sure you unlock all the different timelines including the doomed ones and you'll get it. And following that, Shadow Hearts (PS2) - which is a sequel with a completely different battle system and is a much longer and more conventional game. Sweet Home - horror RPG on the NES.
