Do they not realize that that kills any replayability?

Replayability isn't very relevant. What is relevant is the potential for sequels. In such situations, it's possible they actively desire to reduce or eliminate the chance of a sequel for that particular work.

What's bad is subjective but I've never understood how a bad ending effects replaying a game again assuming the rest of the game is good. A film on the other hand I can understand.

Because what's the point of going through a games story if the ending is just gonna be garbage?

I thought about playing Mass Effect, but 3's ending turned me off because everyone said the ending was garbage.

Im not gonna waste weeks or months of my life on a series that's gonna have a ending that's gonna make me not want to play it again.

What's the point in playing a game just for story when youtube is a thing? I personally play games for well... gameplay first and foremost.

Endings are just hard. Even some authors I love just cannot write a good ending.

And they're not even like movies and video games which have many people involved and so less creative freedom.

I liked how shadow hearts convent did it

you know it's coming and still hit's hard

there are times when a bitter sweet ending is better and more impactful than any happy ever after ending

I think they know that a small fraction of players even finish the game. Also they get greedy and leave threads intentionally loose so theu don't get backed into corners for sequels creating weak endings. Playing safe like that and also to avoid controversy and alienating players can lead to unsatisfying narratives.

I imagine the majority of them are just trying to get a paycheque.

The most important part of that is a good pitch and opening. After that things probably haven't been well thought out. Having a cohesive narrative is hard. It doesn't necessarily require a plan, but it requires a vision and a lot of talent and consistency.
