What would have been different in the aftermath? Would Republicans still defend Trump or would we have seen an immediate universal condemnation of him? Logically I know that wouldn't happen for a number of reasons, and I know the outcome, but knowing that the force was there to be used is chilling. They backed down as soon as an officer shot someone, of course, and would have much sooner if any had drawn outside the Capitol Building. More right-wing clashes happen across the country, some of which are enabled by the more right-wing police force (seeing as Capitol security outright let people into the building, this isn't too far of a stretch) Other democratic senators are attacked and/or killed. Moderate conservatives raise objections, a majority of the party goes all in on Trump. Trump stays in power and conducts press around the clock to normalise what he's done.
