I'm defining "classic" as a match of that type happened before 1/1/1990. So no ladder match, TLC, HIAC* elimination chamber, etc.

Ironman match

I couldn't find an Iron Man match that was confirmed to have happened prior to 1992. Steamboat / Rude was the first confirmed one I could find. I was sure it was a long standing type of gimmick but couldn't find anything to support that.

Any idea when those first started? I'm pretty sure I remember Georgia Championship Wrestling or early WCW doing it in the 80s, but I can't find anything to confirm that, either.

I went Empty Arena Match. There have just been so few of them that I've seen, each one feels special. Though I haven't been watching wrestling in the COVID world, so it may seem blase now.

I think classic steel cage matches still hold up well, especially viewing it in the times. Typically the blow off match of a classic feud.

Strap matches are so rarely any good. Normally bad match.

Scaffolding matches have a sort of special place in history but only belong in history. Anything more extreme than ECW is too extreme, anything less than that is pretty boring, most of the time. But for as boring as it is, there is a real sense of danger.

Lumber Jack matches normally fail to live up.

I quit matches are good.

2/3 falls is a less good version of Iron Man matches.

No DQ rarely meant anything special when it was meant to be threatening and has been watered down too much.

Royal Rumble or Battle Royals just don't have the type of action i like. There have been a couple of really good ones but I don't care for most.

Wargames

Oh those are older than I thought. I was thinking Wrestlewar 1991 was the first of those matches. Actually goes back to 1987.
