Pay $25 for an $8 burger before tip. When it gets to you, it's cold and soggy. Basically inedible. Why the fuck would you sacrifice the quality of your food while at the same time paying triple the price for it? Just get off the fuckin couch and go get it or cook something at home.

Or order pizza because at least they have the warming bags so shit is still nice and steamy.

I'm a GrubHub driver and yeah...

It isn't too often that I deliver food that is still warm when I get there. A lot of the time the food has been sitting there for a while.

I ordered Taco Bell the other day off of GrubHub for the first time. I always meant to test out GrubHub as a customer, but instead I've only worked as a driver for the past 9 months. The food was definitely less fresh than if I had picked it up myself. A good deal more expensive even with a $10 promotional credit for a first time user.

I don't understand why people order off of this platform, but I'm thankful when they do it and tip me well on top of that.

Like most restaurants seal their food so this shouldn't be possible generally. Some restaurants give it to us unsealed too though. I will admit that the temptation is there, but it would be so very wrong to do. My morals involving food require that I could never mess with someone's food. I'm not a monster lol.

This. They take a chunk out of the total bill to the point that most restaurants don't turn a profit on your food when you use GrubHub or Doordash.

I've never used em and never will. Fuck GrubHub and their annoying, fat commercials.

i don't either. first, they inflate the prices of the food, then they charge a fee and then you're expected to tip. so a $10 burger + fries ends up being like $20 and its cold by the time it arrives. simply not worth it. and they shaft their drivers by not counting them as "employees".

GrubHub provides drivers with insulated delivery bags. Everyone is supposed to get a large bag and an xl bag, but they messed up for me and sent me the same package twice so I have four delivery bags.

Ubereats and Postmates charge money for their delivery bags though they aren't terribly expensive.

I have no idea what Door dash does, but I hope they give out those bags for free. They're super basic delivery bags.

We both work from home and neither of us ever feels like driving anywhere. Plus all the good spots are 15-20 min away. We get dashpass for free so free delivery on everything and reduced fees make it worth it for now. Most drivers use a bag to keep things warm.

I'm a door dash driver and they gave me an insulated bag and a mask 3 days after I started for free. Honestly I've been more surprised just how little people tip, which really shouldn't surprise me in hindsight. The amount of $3 orders I decline for 10 items that is 10miles away, my acceptance rate is at a 32% lol.

That being said, I only ever choose 1 restaurant at a time to pick up from because I want the customers food to be warm. I think its pretty scummy when the app sends me to go pick up a 2nd meal, if I was the customer that would bother me.

Still, it's pretty fun being a driver. I made roughly $60 in 2 hours last Sunday due to the Super bowl.

Yeah, this is why I takeout most of the time unless there's free delivery and have cash on hand for tips. I really don't mind. Plus so many delivery drivers need help finding my exact apartment so I'm over it.

Oh and some of these places that require like a $10 minimum when the meal is like $7 is just lol

Well for starters, I don't know what place you're ordering from where you're spending $25 on one burger, but it's probably not a place suited for food delivery. A lot of places aren't.

All of my doordash/uber eats orders have basically been from chains and the price is just $5 more than it normally costs in person, and it's not cold when it gets to my house either. Maybe you're ordering from way too far away.

Also "get off the couch and go get it" doesn't really apply when... not everyone has a car. It's lowkey annoying when so many people suggest that

I live in the middle of a city surrounded by restaurants. The furthest one I'd order from is 10 mins away.

I agree for the reasons everyone listed. Where I am Uber eats adds a service fee, local city fee and delivery fee. At minimum that's an extra 5 dollars before taxes and tip even if I can find something with free delivery. So, I'll only use it if I'm expensing a lunch.

2 reasons

  • Its very convenient (this is the worst reason)
  • They give a lot of deals/promotions, and also there are credit cards that give you credit for these services (this is the best reason)
I also usually get pickup to save even more money, but when I have gotten delivery it has been fine for the most part.

As a GrubHub driver I mostly pick up from large chain restaurants. A lot of McDonalds and Taco Bell. Like I don't get why anyone would care about any of these companies. They likely weren't hurting too bad for business during the shutdowns, because the vast majority of their business is drive thru's anyways. Like I would imagine that McDonalds wouldn't put itself out there on GrubHub and UberEats if it truly was a bad deal for them.

I can certainly understand small businesses being hurt by this, but a lot of national chains seem fine. Crappy chains like Applebee's we're doing bad before this so screw them I guess too lol.

While this is true, restaurants generally have a level of oversight in food handling that delivery drivers do not, and there's more standing in the way of that behavior than an individual's personal moral compass

I pick up from places like Chipotle, McDonald's, Panera, Taco Bell, etc. But I don't get the small business issue? Like the local Wings N Burger place or local Chinese food place don't even have a delivery driver position, so giving it out to Door Dash or Uber Eats makes sense.

Yeah that's why I said small businesses lol restaurant margins are usually incredibly thin. Big corporate restaurants are able to afford the usual 30% tax these services charge for a variety of reasons. My parents own a small food establishment and they had to close during the pandemic because they couldn't afford to stay open with delivery services only. Hell, Grubhub was fucking them raw before the pandemic.

I dont know how true it is that local businesses are hurt by this because they increase their prices on these apps, presumably to cover the fees that they get charged.

Also the apps give them business that they wouldnt necessarily have gotten. Ive personally been introduced to one restaurant by an app that I would never have heard of otherwise, and I go there relatively often now.

They would have to increase their prices by 20%-30% in order for it to even be remotely profitable. And a lot of places don't do that because they're competing with the McDonalds and the Applebees of the industry that are able to leave their prices the same and still remain profitable.

Being introduced to a new restaurant is cool and all but that new one you found probably had to pay quite a bit extra to get boosted on the app and the increased clientele, if delivery only continues, could ruin them as it did thousands of businesses last year. It's literally a racket.

I know that the costs on Uber Eats are usually a lot more people than on Grubhub, which Im would be for different fees.

And the restaurant I mentioned increased their price by about 20% from just ordering normally, at least for the food I buy.

Also the reason I even use these apps is because I get a monthly credit from a credit card and sometimes I get deals from the apps themselves that make using the apps less expensive than ordering normally.

The ridiculous charge these services put on restaurants is just the tip of the iceberg. They're the cause of the menu discrepancies, late orders, holding positive reviews behind a paywall, charging restaurants wrongfully for general calls made through their links, etc. It's a nightmare for small restaurants. I've talked to many restaurant owners and they all fucking hate it. Not a single person likes the business that comes from it unless they're already selling overpriced shit to begin with.
