The temperature climbed 20 degrees celcius (36 or so degrees F) here in the last 12 or so hours.

It's still -27 Celcius (-17 F) after the jump.

7 more degrees and you're gonna see fat white dudes walking down the street in cargo shorts and windbreakers. like death and taxes, it's a guarantee for this town.

I got some warnings to drip my pipes, so I'm letting them run. I'm only letting drops out and idk exactly how much is needed.

I doubt any of the ice that gets on the road will go away until late next week. I think temperatures are below freezing the whole time so slick roads for days. And since this is Texas people will refuse to slow down lol.

As a human that has lived in winters in Canada, here are my tips:

1. Wear layers. Wear some long johns underneath your pants. Wear a long sleeve shirt, a short sleeve shirt, a hoodie, and then a coat. That way, if you start getting warm, you can shed a layer and not lose resistence to the elements.

2. Don't go to sleep in your clothes. Sleep as normal. The more clothes you wear while sleeping will make you sweat more, which will cool throughout the night and make you sick if you continue on this path. You're better off getting into bed cold than warm/hot.

3. Don't drive like your normally would. Drive like you're in a monsoon. Be vigilant and take your time.

4. Don't listen to people telling you that "-5 is nothing, I deal with that every day in the winter." They're just trying to prove that they are better than you when we all have our shitty weather to deal with.

yeah the driving thing i don't get why us northerners have to be so shitty. our counties are prepared to handle snow and ice much better with hundreds and thousands of salt trucks and plows. the south doesn't have that preparedness because it's such an albatross event. combined with people not accustomed to driving in that weather leads to 100 car pileups like we saw last week in Texas

See you're tougher than i am. Currently its -35 where i am and i'm fine with it but 3 months of that kind of heat would be just brutal. I guess thats the Canadian in me.

I highly suggest you guys stay the fuck home. we're lucky up north that we expect winter storms every year so we're prepared but even with an army of snow plows, the roads are dangerous during a storm.

Our low is gonna be like 29 this whole week and I'm seeing 5 and shit in Houston.

If you think households that get $200 energy bills normally are going to get a 5k bill, i don't know what to tell you

This is an unprecedented situation, natural gas is now at an all time high, up from $3 to $600+. We probably won't know the damage for a couple weeks, but I don't see how bills won't be many times higher than what people are used to.

I've had a total of 5 hours of electricity since 12Am Monday. This is the first time it's come back with internet service. I've had to keep the water running on everything to keep the pipes from freezing, and I did that from the beginning thinking that I was being paranoid. I'm one of only three people on the block who has water at all now. Everyone else left only the faucets on the interior walls running, which has historically been enough, and they're all frozen now.

Everyone has generators but probably only enough gas to last another day.

The only reason I'm relatively comfortable is because I have a gas fireplace and no kids but between the having to run the water and running this gas fireplace, I'm gonna have some hefty bills I'm not really in a position to cover. The only good thing about the water is that I'm filling up containers to share with the neighbors, so at least it's not just all going down the drain.

I was cooking on the grill but the propane tank emptied and tried as I could to get some before this, stores around me have been out for weeks. I have a bag of charcoal in the garage but I decided to do some batch cooking in the hours I've been able to use my electric range (which will be replaced with gas after this, something I was mulling over but putting off).

I've been pretty good about prepping in recent times, so I am able to take this hit but I fucking hate the cold. It was 30F in one of the upstairs bedrooms. Like I said, I have no kids and it's just me, so it's not been a big deal. I can't imagine the people trying to keep their families going through this.

I've been getting anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes of power at a time, so I'll probably be getting cut off again soon. I'll try to provide some more updates when the power comes back again. I'm not wasting my precious phone battery on gamefaqs lol >_>

Also, I live by a firehouse and there has been a pretty steady stream of emergency vehicles rolling out. I also live right next to a busy intersection and occasionally hear fender benders. Fortunately there hasn't been anything bad there. People seem to be pretty good about staying off the roads through this, which is surprising.

Are there places that are salted/plowed 24/7? Usually the roads by me are almost always covered in snow even after getting plowed when it is snowing and I live north of Chicago.
