I think if someone considers bills to be expensive, or needs to be frugal at the grocery store instead of buying whatever they want, theyre poor.

If you can't afford the Internet, you're well below the poverty line.

Its considered a basic human right these days so... yes you're wrong. Technically.

But one does not need it to survive so I agree with you're argument.

Internet might not be a "basic need" by the strictest definitions, but in a developed nation it is not a luxury by any remotely reasonable definition.

And what's the median US salary? A far more useful metric in this case

its real hard to distinguish between people who are poor vs people who are bad with money. someone could be making $20k/year, but lives with roommates, drives a reliable beater car, wears thrift store clothes, has all basic needs met and is able to save money each month. compared to someone making $100k/year who is riddled with debt from that new car, fancy clothes and expensive dining habits. in these cases, who poor, the one who has less or the one with more debt?

It's not a necessity for survival but neither is clothing or electricity.

It's very much a "basic need" because if you don't have it your life is crippled in so many ways.

Living wise, definitely the one who has less. Tons of people out here with debt that they have no intention of paying off and are just going to die with

Pretty much if theyre trying to live independently off welfare and are in section 8 housing...theyre going to be broke af. Theres next to no money leftover for any luxuries. And theyre likely struggling to pay their bills as is.

And if youre that poor, you cant afford a lot of monthly bills like cable or internet. Phone and power after rent would already be significant.
