Why is it called government cheese?When I was growing up, poor as can be their were food donation programs (gleeners, focus hope, good fellows and others) that were run by donations and government assistance. Some stuff you got was super generic. Like cans of beef that was just a white label with the word BEEF on it. One item was the so called "government cheese". Which was a big brick of yellow, waxy, hard cheese in a white box. It used to be good until about 1996 when they changed the formula to use more low fat milk or something. --- ...
