I used to have a huge collection of games, including rare ones, but I've sold most of them. I've still got Tales of Destiny 2 and Thousand Arms because... I don't know why. I was going to sell them, and in the back of my mind I still want to, but part of me doesn't want to let go of them.

God, I don't get how these games aren't just rereleased on more available hardware.

23. Jean Gunnhildr

Series: Genshin Impact
Nominator: Menji (0/3 remaining)
Personal Familiarity: No
Attractiveness: 80 (24/145 tie)
Personality: 66 (42/145 tie)
Girlfriendness: 71 (30/145 tie)
Overall Waifu Score: 72.3
Hair: Blonde (6/62 remaining)
Eyes: Blue (5/44 remaining)
Race: White (8/62 remaining)
Age: 20-29 (6/58 remaining)
Medium: Video Game (15/62 remaining)

Menji dead. I suppose Jean doesnt count as a weeaboo waifu, but only by the narrowest and most technical of margins. Anyway, Ill be the first to admit that my hint was too obvious. I guess theres no Lucina Valucina in fiction. Is there a Sonia von Sonia? Betty Bettyson? Ah well. Jean, with her extremely French first name and [REDACTED BY ORDER OF THE PLAYS TOO MUCH CAVES OF QUD ORGANIZATION] last name, is definitely the standout waifu of Genshin Impact. And dont try to tell me its a fantasy world where none of that matters, I know. Its just fun to make fun of naming stuff.

I guess it goes without saying that shes also beautiful. Ill level with you Ive got a thing for blondes. Its by far the most common hair color remaining on the list (only brown hair comes close), and blue eyes and green eyes are also the most common eye colors left. Anyway, Im a little concerned about where she got those pants. They go beyond being merely skintight and enter the realm of Im pretty sure its just paint over your legs, theres no way those are actually pants.

Why is Jeans Girlfriendness so high, you ask? Well, its a combination of three factors. First, shes basically the perfect leader and protector of a city, whos so awesome that everyone loves her, even the guy who hates knights. Shes just really charismatic and dedicated, which is good, even if her flaw is supposed to be that she takes on too much work. And shes trained in etiquette, history, and all of that fancy noble stuff that lets her seem like the perfect cultured waifu. I mean, what, is there disadvantage to being able to say that your girlfriend is basically the leader of a city? I guess shell always be busy, and she protects things, so shes verging a little into superhero territory, but Im willing to give her the same kind of pass that I gave police waifus. I think given the setting, knight waifus are a near equivalent. And she likes making schedules in advance and keeping to them to make things run efficiently? Girl, you know my tastes too well. I know a ton of people who are just completely incapable of planning anything out more than five minutes in advance and it drives me crazy. Like, Im trying to imagine the day-to-day of having Jean as your girlfriend, and it seems like almost entirely positives.

Anyway, the second reason is that her birthday is March 14, which will make it really easy for me to remember, since mine is March 12. Immediate big benefit to me. Also, she makes the single best pizza in the world. I ****ing love pizza. As the only person who can make Invigorating Pizza, which I know Ill like because its base dish is a mushroom pizza, I know that Ill always be set to have 34% of my max HP restored and regenerate 980 HP every 5 seconds for thirty seconds. What a deal from a potential girlfriend! To be honest, Im a little concerned that this pizza involves cabbage as an ingredient, Ive never seen that before, but Im willing to try it at least once. And she likes dandelions enough for them to be her trademark? Okay, thats fine. Ill admit to not having any strong opinions about any kind of flowers.

Id like to say that theres a ton of information available about how to play Jean, but very little available about what shes like as a person. I still got it, of course, but if you try to find information on her, its all heres how to play the best character in the game. I watched a YouTube video comparing Jean to the other playable characters, and she seems like the most overpowered one ever. Is she like the big banner character for the gacha elements of the game? Because I can see that shes advertised a lot, is the most popular waifu from the series, and has a 5-star rarity rating. Can I also just ask why is it called Ameno damage? Why not just say Wind? I realize that they named all of the elements things like Geo and Pyro and stuff, so Aero would also be acceptable. Im just saying, its weird.

Anyway, let me just reiterate: Jean is filling that very specific niche of refined, elegant, but still asskicking waifu. She does it very, very well. I can imagine in like a different medium, if this was a book or something, her getting a lot of time to be really fleshed out in a ton of really interesting ways. Like, Im reading through Wheel of Time right now, and the difference between how a video game can flesh out a character and a book can is night and day. Whos the most emotionally complex video game character? I dont even know.

Anyway, Jean. Quality waifu from a gacha game of all things. Color me surprised.

No, she's only average. She does a lot of things okay but nothing especially well, unless you happen to be on a stage with a cliff you can throw enemies off of. Calling her a banner character for the gacha element, maybe, she hasn't had a dedicated banner herself though so it seems like a stretch.

Interesting. I also noticed that there's an entire element that no character specializes in, which is a weirdo move.

It's room for future design.

And Jean is still one of the best characters in the game. She just isn't the best at anything in particular. Want a healer? Use Barbara or Qiqi. Want a character for repositioning with wind power, and the very powerful anemo artifacts? Use Venti or Sucrose. Want damage? Heh, we got a whole warehouse of those guys. But you want someone who can do all those things without completely sucking (heh) at any of them? Jean's your girl. She's also good for a movement speed bonus and is one of the original 5-stars with release, which makes her easier to get on average than some of the others. If you could start the game and got to pick one character to start your account with, there's a strong case for Jean being the ideal choice.

Good write-up, though.

22. Yuki Nagato

Series: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Nominator: LeonhartFour (0/4 remaining)
Personal Familiarity: Yes
Attractiveness: 60 (83/145 tie)
Personality: 77 (15/145 tie)
Girlfriendness: 80 (13/145 tie)
Overall Waifu Score: 72.3
Hair: Purple (1/13 remaining)
Eyes: Yellow (0/9 remaining)
Race: Asian (11/58 remaining)
Age: 15-19 (15/62 remaining)
Medium: Video Games (14/62 remaining)

Im aware that Nagato isnt really using magic, but Kyon at one point describes her as using bogus magic, so Im counting it. Sidenote: I could have sworn that Nagato was supposed to be fourteen, but the Wiki says shes in eleventh grade. My mistake, I guess. I mean, even more technically, shes only three years old because shes an artificial being, but if I counted that, I would have to count gods and spirits and stuff as being thousands of years old, so for our purposes, I guess shes sixteen. Before I even go on, whatever happened to this series? Like twelve years ago, everyone was in love with it. I dont even watch anime, and I watched it. Its like the most popular anime ever that just stopped.

Yuki Nagato is another hypocrite choice for me, where a lot of the things I complained about with other waifus, Im just going to count as positives for her. No one can stop me. Nagato is just so wonderful and fun, and is easily the best waifu in the series. I can barely even remember the other time traveler girl. All I remember is Haruhi making her wear a French maid outfit. I guess speaking of cute anime girls, Nagatos serious demeanor does make her stand out from the crowd. Shes not exactly crazy good-looking by the lists standards, but shes also not a generic anime girl, which is to her benefit.

In case you dont know, Nagato is all I was created with limited social functions, so I cant act like a normal person. This is either absurd or brilliant, because she instead just nods, quietly says one-word answers, and so on and its like the cutest thing ever. So, was the Data Overmind who created her thinking the limited social functions dont matter for a being whose job is mostly to observe and obey, or was it thinking teehee this emotionless girl will be the most adorable thing ever and easily infiltrate the stupid humans? Because one implies that it just got lucky, and the other implies a greater understanding of human culture than it seems to show elsewhere. You might even think that an emotionless waifu would be an issue, but it honestly doesnt take her that long to develop some more individuality, and shes still just as great afterward.

Im just going to say it: I generally dont like the emotionless girl archetype (thank God no one nominated Rei or that one girl from Martian Successor Nadesico, the other two anime with them Ive watched), but Nagato really makes it work. I dont even know how, theres just something a little indefinable about what makes her so appealing. Like, let me be clear, her show would lose like 50% of the appeal if she wasnt in it, and shes like the third most important character. I didnt even remember the esper guy until I looked up the series again for this list, but I sure as hell remembered every detail about Yuki Nagato.

As far as Girlfriendness goes, Nagatos got it all. Yeah, shes a super smart alien who can surely get any job she wants, even though her actual job is to secretly watch a teenage girl, but thats not really the extent of it. And yeah, shes basically omnipotent (I think the only thing she cant do is time travel?) and especially manipulates luck (can you imagine how easy it will be to pass multiple-choice tests with her on your side?). But really, she likes video games, sci-fi books, and keeps her apartment meticulously clean. Those things alone would push her pretty high. Im trying to think of more things to say about her that dont involve just reciting specific moments from the anime, but the end result is that Im pretty sure Nagato would be an ideal girlfriend. She even gets slightly disappointed after realizing a guys not actually interested in her. I guess she might actually have the problem of being on the ****list of an even more omnipotent superbeing that only doesnt punish her because she has a connection to an even more omnipotent superbeing, but Im honestly not sure how to factor that into her ranking, so I just wont. Ill assume Kyon got her off that list again like he did the first time.

Ultimately, what Im saying is this: Yuki Nagato disobeys a lot of my normal waifu rules, but does so in a way that works anyway. I guess that makes her good at breaking rules in both the series and my dorky waifu list.

Not really. Disappearance was a major success.

What happened is Tanigawa stopped writing. The Disappearance movie came out in 2010, Surprise came out in 2011, and then there was no new Haruhi book until six months ago.

You sure about that? I interpreted them as just not being perfect recreations of humans, but I admit that doesn't make complete sense. Now that I think about it, I think I'm remembering more things. Did Nagato say she can't time travel, or that she just personally chooses not to? I remember her saying something like 'it's not difficult.'

They're based on how the Thought Entity thinks humans behave, so yeah, they're definitely imperfect representations because it doesn't understand humanity that well.

And yeah, Nagato says she can't time travel but the concept isn't that difficult. Well, she can't physically time travel, but she can "sync" her memories with past or future versions of herself, so it's a form of time travel, I guess.
