The vast majority of shops here in NZ do not accept checks anymore.

Heck, even several of the banks no longer accept checks.

I went to a smaller grocery store to grab 2 things. A had 2 people in line in front of me both using checks. No self check out because I use those 100% of the time when its available even if my cart is full to the brim

If i theoretically lost my wallet and couldn't pay with card or cash, i'd probably go home to get some cash or write a check for groceries. But i imagine this is talking about people who regularly write checks for things.
