A few anachronisms or simplifications to serve the narrative isn't automatically bad, so long as it's a fictional work anyway.

Like, Im not going to complain if and then giant enemy crabs attack a feudal Japanese village takes liberties with the past for the sake of modern sensibilities. I was pondering on what sort of liberties would be okay to make if you wanted to make the story more palatable to a casual audience if you were to dramatize it. --- I am so tired of CE.
