Singer-songwriter Demi Lovato has shared a lengthy Instagram post criticising the trend of gender reveal parties, branding them transphobic. Gender reveal parties are held by expectant parents, who announce the assigned gender of their baby, often by unveiling a celebratory item coloured either pink or blue. The post shared by Lovato, which was originally authored by someone else, is entitled Why gender reveals are transphobic. Transphobia is not just about prejudice against individual trans people, its also a way of thinking that understands non-trans people as more natural/organic and erases everyone else, read the post. These ideas, like the gender binary, fuel mistreatment of all people, but especially trans and gender non-conforming people. Gender reveals are based on the illusion that genitals = gender and that there are only two options boy or girl, it continued. This definition erases the fact that there are boys with vaginas and girls with penises and that there are people who are neither boys nor girls. The idea that sex is based on genitalia is inconsistent with science.

Until we know otherwise, between the ears matches between the legs. There's no reason to put a child's entire life on hold until the day that he, she, or zhi can decide what they are.

Gender reveal parties became mainstream around the same time as trans issues hit mainstream consciousness, they also seem to be popular among wealthier white suburban couples or rural white couples, both of which tend to lean towards conservative values
So yeah, seems obvious

This I agree with. It's kinda pointless to throw a party to reveal whether your child is a XX or XY. But I wouldn't say it's transphobic.

This sounds like something someone would say to mock people who support transgender rights.

On one hand, I feel like we dont need to erase all traces of the traditional gender binary. Like damn if people want to be happy theyre having a daughter and celebrate by eating pink cake then let them.

On the other hand, gender reveal parties are asinine and cringe, and as noted, the people most likely to hold them seem to be the most likely to be hostile towards non-conforming identities.

On the other hand, erasing the celebration of tradition seems like an inefficient route to erasing the stigma of deviating from that tradition. Theres no reason a family couldnt celebrate the gender of their newborn, while also celebrating the coming out of that same child if they identified as transgender down the line.

On the other hand, the proposition of tearing down gender reveal parties is probably a necessary part of the overall conversation of re-evaluating societal gender norms, and therefore should not be dismissed purely on the grounds of perceived harmlessness.

They're not something I would do. I think, if you want to announce that you're having a boy or a girl, just do it on Facebook like everyone else.

But I also think they're mostly benign, as long as you don't do something stupid like trying to fire a cannon or shoot off fire works around kindling.

As for whether or not they're transphobic, if they are, it is on such a minor level that I can't be bothered to care.

Thats unfortunate. Nothing wrong with having a gender reveal party, but if you must, just keep it simple. Serve some pink or blue cake and drinks. Maybe do the dorky hats and banners. Leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals.
