Whenever it's non-functional. Like completely non-functional. My last phone the charge port died, so I stripped the wires of a charger and taped the wires to the battery on the two little gold tabs and plugged it in to charge it. I get the most out of my phone, I buy cheap shit Walmart Galaxy phones for like $30 and get 3+ years out of them.

As often as I can afford it. I only buy full retail unlocked phones and I'm very picky so a new phone for me generally runs $1000 plus several hundred in accessories.

I'm over 30, and am only on my second smartphone.

I got this one in 2019, and will use it as long as I reliably can. Only got this one cause my old one got to the point the battery would die within 2 hours from a full charge.

December 2013-January 2015 small Samsung smart phone
January 2015-November 2017 Note 4
October 2017-November 2019 Note 8
November 2019-Present Note 10+

Im probably not upgrading again unless the battery on my Note 10+ gives out exceedingly quickly by the end of the year. Probably will hold out for Note 22 if I can though I wouldn't be against a Note 21+/Ultra

This is my first time having a top tier flagship on release so I'm keeping this for at least 3 years. But normally I would get the free smartphone with 2 year plan phone since the iPhone 4 qualified for it. Last 2 were the only ones I spent money on but both were less then 500 out of pocket due to trading in or selling my old ones. Never in my life will I consider dropping 4 digits or more on a phone out of pocket.

As long as humanly possible. I had a cheap smartphone from MetroPCS from 2014 to 2018. In 2018, I got a new phone plan with Google Fi, so I got a Google Pixel 2. I plan on using the Pixel 2 until the wheels fall off, or at least until the battery needs replacing. Right now, it lasts through 5 hours of constant use before it needs to charge. It still lasts 16+ hours if I only use it for phone calls.

I got my first smartphone in 2010, and my current one, which I've had nearly 2 years now, is my sixth. So that's an average of <2 years per phone, but in my defense pretty much all of those were replaced out of necessity.

If my employer didnt pay for my phone, Id probably upgrade every two years. I use my phone just about every waking hour of the day.
