Everyone's saying "Don't buy Blu-Ray, get 4k"

But can you still enjoy a DVD

I will, but i'm kind of an HD snob now and if I have the option, HD over SD for sure. I'm indifferent about 1080 HD compared to 4K, I don't see enough of a difference to care.

I still have a physical collection of DVDs/Blu Rays. very few 4Ks, like probably only a handful.

My thing is I'm a sucker for Digital now. Even if I have the DVD/Blu, i'll try to find it on Digital because I'm so lazy. I just did Vudu disc to digital on two DVD/Blu Rays I physically own just so I didn't have to insert the disc into my PS4

It upscales to look closer to HD, but no, it doesn't magically make DVDs have the same quality and detail as Blu-ray. It's fine if you are happy with it, but you aren't getting the upscale you think you are.

Garbage is a relative term. Older media still looks fine. They don't look uber-perfect, and the issues only really appear when you can measure your Television's size in yards, but they're very watchable.

Not really. I actually sold a few DVDs recently. It was mostly stuff I didn't want anymore, but two of them were Back to the Future and Back to the Future II. I bought them in high school, but never got around to buying Part III. It doesn't make sense to hunt down the DVD for it, so I just sold them and figured I could probably find the trilogy on Blu-ray for $20.

...And now I kinda want to watch the first one.

I also have a few things on DVD that aren't available on other formats. For instance, I have Kiki's Delivery Service! Now, I know what you're thinking: "Rinku, you can easily buy that on Blu-ray or watch it on streaming (like HBO Max, I think.)" Ah, that's true... as long as you're not a weirdo like me who has a deeply nostalgic/emotional attachment to the 1998 English dub and soundtrack. In newer releases, they cut a ton of Jiji's dialogue, remove incidental music pieces, and replace the English language songs in the beginning and ending with the Japanese originals. Is it more true to the original? Of course. Is it still the movie I loved as child? Mostly, but it's different enough that watching it doesn't bring me the nostalgic joy that this DVD does.

That's interesting. There's not even an option to switch back to the original dub?

Anyway, this feeds nicely into what I was gonna say. With rights disputes and censorship of media, physical media is the best way to go. I went into this topic expecting DVD vs Digital, and was kinda disappointed it was DVD vs BD.

Nope. To be fair, what they've essentially done is cut out any additions that were made to the original English dub to make it more faithful to the original Japanese version.

A lot of Jiji's English dialogue was improvised by his voice actor, Phil Hartman (in what I think might have been his last role), and makes the film a lot more comedic. In Japanese, the character is voiced by a woman and doesn't speak much at all.

I'm usually the kind of person who hates when shows/movies (particularly from Japan) are effectively "sanitized" or heavily Americanized for a Western audience, but in this case it's just what I grew up with. Similar to that: have you ever tried watching the uncut, Japanese version of a kid's anime you watched growing up? I've tried that with Pokemon (Indigo League mostly) and Yu-Gi-Oh and it's just... boring. I enjoy those shows for the nostalgia value and I don't have that connection with the Japanese versions. Are the English dubs a complete bastardization of the source material? Yeah, I don't dispute that, but it's what I like.

I don't own a 4K TV & have no plans on buying one anytime soon. On my 47" TV, regular DVDs look fine.

Then again, I've never been a graphics whore for videogames or anything else. I'm old enough to have grown up playing on the Atari back in the 80s.

Wanted to second this notion. I'm someone who routinely accepts a 30-40% drop in quality if it's more convenient.

I generally prefer to watch anime dubbed over subbed. If the dub is at least 60% as good as the sub and as easy/easier to access? I will watch that everytime. I often watch twitch streams in 480p so it doesn't buffer as much. My laptop runs Final Fantasy XIV at sub 20 FPS and I'm fine with it because the game is completely playable. Would it be great if all these things were 100%? Sure! I watched a friend play FFXIV on her PS5 and it looked gorgeous. I'm still fine with mine because I'm too lazy to build a gaming PC. Similarly, I'm too lazy/cheap to replace most of my DVDs with Blu-rays. I got a ton of free movies on DVD about a year ago. I wasn't gonna be like, "MMM, these are low-quality compared to Blu-ray," because I was getting them for the low low price of free!

I can't watch Yu-Gi-Oh at all. It suffers from the common anime disease of having fuck-all happening for long periods of time. I read Yu-Gi-Oh and it was fantastic.

I've still got most of my DVDs but I rarely watch them. I find the ones I've watched have looked awful and the sound wasnt as good.

Most of my movies are bluray. I have a handful of 4k DVDs but it doesnt matter because I dont have the player and my projector is 1080p (and the jump in quality isnt worth the jump in price to me)

Yes, if for no other reason that I will never be onboard for fully surrendering media ownership to streaming services, where companies flex their ability to edit & remove content at will. I also don't trust ISPs to not price gouge everyone once the investment on digital is too high to resist. It's why I find it so annoying that computer manufacturers insist on scrapping optical drives.
