Booted up my PC this morning and while it posted, the OS wouldn't load. Originally it was a "boot volume" error, afterwards it wouldn't even go into windows. The BIOS won't see the drive either

Tried a new SATA cable and a new SATA port, both didn't help

I bought the SSD in January 2020, so I'm surprised it went so quickly. It was a decent company too (Crucial)

Does the bios say that there is no bootable media on it? Does the Bios see the drive? If Bios sees the drive then the drive isn't bad per say

Well if Bios doesn't even see it after all you have tried then yeah chances are its dead. I would return it if possible. If possible try it out on another system to make sure. Sadly these things can happen with all electronics. Things get mass produced and some of them become duds. It sucks but that's the way it goes.

I would, but I don't have another system. That's why I tried out all the different Sata cables/ports, no dice

Thanks for the help and advice :)

If it's the Crucial MX500 2.5'' version they all supposedly have firmware issues which makes them die sooner.

That sucks. Crucial should issue a free exchange for something like this

try connecting it as USB OTG to your phone, see if you can see its insides? If not, probably dead.

A workaround for a dead drive? I think that would be to get a new one....

Crucial fucked up and should of tested it out better before they shipped them with that Firmware.

I have the same SSD. It's only two years old. Programs are starting to have small delays and I get micro-stutters in games. So mine might be on it's way out too.

Oh I see, I thought the firmware registered it as dead when it wasn't or something. Yeah, you're right

Hopefully Crucial's warranty is longer than a year and you can get your money back. I wouldn't go with the same exact drive again. I got a couple of SSd's and they're all Samsung Evo's and never had a problem with them. Even though they're on the pricier side for SSD's

I have to go through the store I bought it, instead of the Crucial website

Instead of a repair/replacement, I asked for store credit. They'll give me 60 (I paid 100) and I'll put that towards a non-Crucial SSD

sounds like a scam to me

you should be able to go to the store for your choice of a refund, replacement or repair
and you should be able to go direct to the manufacturer for a repair or replacement under warranty

sounds highly illegal for them to give you less than a full refund

Same, if you stand by your product, then you'll replace it yourselves, especially since this isn't "my drive showed up bent in the box" or something else that can be proven to be the store or their distribution system's fault.

So I did some double checking

The refund will happen no matter what. The 60 store credit I receive will be a kind of "goodwill" offering, since the refund takes time

As for who I return it to, Crucial recommends I return it to Mindfactory but won't enforce it. Since I'm getting the store credit, it's in my interest to return the stuff to Mindfactory imo
