We already had variants from South Africa and the UK. There will always be variants. If your goal is to keep the restrictions in place until every variant has been contained you'll be in lockdown forever. It's not sustainable.

There's always variants to any disease, whether it's a seasonal flu or a worldwide pandemic. Any form of biology is required to evolve in order to continue to propagate an existence.

Researchers fully expected variants to form because there always are variants with every virus. The vaccine should still be effective with the mutations.

But having said that, it's still too early to open up 100%. We need to actually see major results first.

the problem is we haven't even contained the first strain yet. people like yourself who want to rush to open things up are keeping that potential containment from happening. If we just stuck with it early on we'd be so much closer to it, but no...Since not even a month in people have been saying "we can't do this forever!", not knowing that their unwillingness to cooperate is keeping it going "forever".

The MAGAs couldn't even complete a half-assed 2 week lockdown. They definitely won't comply with a future one, wear masks, social distance or wash their fecal matter covered hands just because Trump isn't president anymore.

The people in charge don't give a shit, because keeping things closed keeps them from getting money. So even if they do acknowledge the virus is real, it isn't their problem -- it's a poor person problem.

Define "potential containment." What magic number would you actually accept? Some states go by the R value, and in some states the R value being less than 1 means it's safe to ease restrictions. In fact, only 8 states currently have an R value over 1:

Those were the guidelines set up by the experts. Are then suddenly wrong? What would you propose? "No new cases"?

the fact of the matter is that with a federal government that is unable to move faster on giving aid, thanks to GOP fucks...and collapsing markets everywhere if we don't do something soon, we have no choice but to open up more things.

if anyone disagrees then I'm open to serious alternatives. because at this rate we'll be faced with tens of millions of people who are unemployed and homeless.

and where has this ever worked ever...?

once we got over the hump that this wasn't some disease which killed everyone it touched the treat of an emergency waned significantly. there was no real reason or possibility to contain it at that point.
