Do you think people this tall have an unfair height advantage?

7'9 Nigerian Basketball player, Abiodun Adegoke is hoping to catch the attention fo the NBA after Shaq shared a viral footage of him on the court

The teen who has a towering height is seen dunking a ball with both feet STILL on the ground and if signed he'd be the tallest nba player ever

It shows him dunking a ball with ease at a development camp in Dubai...

And despite the height, he moves with agility making short work of of the weak defense

Shaq shared the video as he's known to using his 7ft frame in devastating effect on the court as Adegoke would be 7 inches taller than any NBA player in history

Former Washington Bullets centre, Gheorghe Muresan who remains the tallest in the NBA in history at 7'7 whlie Manute Bol stood at 7'6

China's Sun Mingming is also 7'9 who holds the record for tallest basketball player in history to play professionally in the US having played for the Harlem Globetrotters

So far Adegoke has been overlooked by American scouts, perhaps due to controversy of his age as Nigerian media reports from 2016 gave his age at 17. At the time he was a student of a sports academy but he insists he's 18

Do you think players who are this tall have an unfair advantage?

Definitely older than he says, and even more definite than that is that his knees will be blown out within 2 years of playing in the nba

Hi FullThrottle. I know you don't really reply to these topics. But can you make an exception for this one? Please explain what would be unfair about a really tall guy in the NBA. It sounds like your definition of "unfair" is very different from everyone else's (there are 0 yes's and 13 no's) and it would be interesting to hear what you mean.

I do think it's a little weird that being absurdly tall is practically a requirement to play in the NBA. I saw a TED talk once, I forget what it was on, where the guy made a note that something like 30% of all the men in the world over seven feet tall play or have played in the NBA. It's almost like athleticism is secondary to gigantism.

And it also changes the dynamic of the gameplay radically. The intent of the game was for people to shoot the ball through the hoop, not to put the ball through the hoop. You don't see that same above-the-rim action in the WNBA, (albeit height is still incredibly emphasized there, too.) Whether that's good or not is open to the beholder. I personally don't enjoy the men's game but I did follow the W for a couple years.

So while I don't think it's any more unreasonable that a tall person gets to play basketball than that a smaller and therefore lighter person makes for a better jockey, I can see how someone having that avenue completely cut off to them because of one physical characteristic, despite anything else they might bring to the table, could be seen by that person as being unfair. If that's what FT was getting at, it's poorly worded, but it's at least a line of thought that makes some sense.

this stat is actually false for what it's worth. A lot of the players listed at 7'0 are not actually 7 feet tall, they're actually 6'11 or 6'10 and using their height in shoes instead of barefoot height. Therefore the stat is comparing a pool of false positives to the pool of true 7 footers. The true stat is definitely far below that reported one and certainly something a lot more reasonable. There are a lot of true 7 footers who try basketball and simply aren't good enough to play beyond a college level, not even taking into account the multitude of health issues that individuals that tall usually encounter.

Plenty of people have made the NBA at less than 6 foot. Muggsy Bogues was 5'3!
