I thought this article might be interesting to PotD because I think it describes a few posters here we are all familiar with:

https://newrepublic.com/article/161560/gen-x-1990s-cancel-culture-thinkers

What are your thoughts?

Gen X and older millennials are more likely to whine about cancel culture because their rhetoric has roots in the culture wars of the 90's, which was largely anti-PC, and their media landscape was molded through the infancy of the uncensored Internet. Thus, not only is the media they're connected with more likely to be reassessed, but their upbringing makes them more prone to be defensive of such reassessments instead of understanding.

Man this article is hard to read. So much unnecessary alliteration and strange vocabulary. It comes across as pompous.

Anyways, I'm not sure what point the author is trying to make. From the sound of it, it seems like he thinks people are childish for opposing censorship? I'm surprised that he talks about kids lashing out against political correctness in the '90s, yet makes it sound like it was supported by right-wingers back then. From what I remember, it was mainly lashing out against religious right-wingers who wanted to ban everything that was more fun than Jesus.

I don't get what's childish about wanting to have the freedom to make your own decisions. If you don't like a certain piece of media, don't consume it, but also don't ban it either. Let people make their own choices.

The 800lbs gorilla in the room is that this age group has been through this before. They've seen what moral outrage can do to public discourse when it's weaponized. That was a huge formative shared experience, and that was happening way before the internet took off. I don't want to diminish the importance of an unfiltered, uncensored internet, but to not even acknowledge what was happening in the 80s and early to mid 90s is just ignant.

It's also silly to group everything as "cancel culture" when one thing is for example getting upset that fantasy wizards are demonic and another is getting upset at things being racist af and affecting real life people

the juxtaposition is just ridiculous when far more absurd examples exist from the people now decrying social backlash

It's not really helpful to frame these kinds of disagreements as being the result of pervasive generational mindsets. It makes the issues seem unsolvable and breeds resentment. We should be directing our energy towards the real enemy (the boomers).

agreed

Gen Xers might seem grumpy all the time and overly morose and sarcastic about every damn thing, but we need to work with them to stop the fucking boomers and zoomers

Time is a flat circle.

We saw the Right go overboard. DnD Satanic panic. The PMRC. Electric Soldier Porygon. 2 Live Crew.

Now the Left goes overboard. Digging up a decade old post on social media to be offended about.

Cosby, Weinstein? Yeah, legitimate cases for outrage.

NDT takes a too-close look at a tattoo or Aziz Ansari has an awkward date? Not so much.

The daily stream of outrage these days? Makes satanic panic look like a footnote.

So many swollen amygdalas. The internet is the best and worst thing that has ever happened to humanity.

Someone made a mean tweet. They should never work again and they should die penniless in the gutter while their children starve.

It's gotten out of hand.

This. "Cancel culture" isn't a thing. In the real world it's called consequences for one's actions.

The point is most things anti-woke crusaders complain about aren't even really censorship. If the free market decides it doesn't want what you're selling, that's just capitalism at work.

Yeah I'm willing to believe it's him, there's definitely a lot of overlap and the timing of this account's appearance is suspicious. The views and style for sure scream Whiskey, but the tone is definitely less spicy and dialed back a bit if it is him. Maybe he has learned.

It's a sleep inducing article (even Kotaku articles are better than this), not to mention mostly incorrect. We're better off without outrage culture at least outside of Hollywood and celebrities (but even then social media shouldn't be the end all be all against celebrity crazy and creeps, due process is still important), because outrage culture is too harmful to the average person.
